Better to squee late than never at all...
Ok, first of all, the cover of Rin in the field with the caption "I will definitely get back that sweet, smiling face." We haven't even started the chapter yet, and my eyes were already welling up. That image and those words got to me so bad.
I really liked the way we got to hear Sesshomaru's thoughts throughout the chapter. Usually we just see him silent and never really know exactly what he's thinking. But lo and behold he has feelings! He was angry at Tenseiga for not working. Unlike Inuyasha, who might rage and stamp about, Sesshomaru keeps it very controlled and on the inside.
And then, regret! Sesshomaru is very quickly going through the five stages of grief, it seems. First denial, as in when he just stood there thinking, "...she's dead?" Then anger, as in "Why, Tenseiga?! Answer me!!" Then regret--ok, technically the next stage of grief is bargaining--but it's very significant the way he thinks that if he had just left her in a human village after he first revived her, she'd still be alive now.
Since when does Sesshomaru ever second guess himself? Sure, we don't see his thoughts too often, but this seems like a new thing for him. And I love it!
I continue to LOVE the scenes with Jaken and Sessmom. His "If Sesshomaru-sama dies, what will I do...!" is so awww. And then Sessmom calls him "Little youkai" again! XD I love how Jaken keeps trying to get her to call him by name.
Ok, so Sessmom opens the path, and Sesshomaru basically chooses death for Rin's sake! When he said, "Kohaku. You take that path," my eyes started tearing up again. I kind of took that as concern for Kohaku, like, well at least you should make sure to get out alive.
Which brings us to Kohaku neglecting the path. Why did he do that? He either cares about Rin a lot, doesn't want to leave Sesshomaru, or he still has a death wish (which may be heightened after Kikyo's death). Or maybe it's a combination of all of the above.
One of the best lines in the chapter goes to Sessmom: "Who cares. That jerk can never come back for all I care." XD The perfect moment of comic relief after a scene so serious and dramatic. I love how Sessmom goes against type of the stereotypical caring mother. She cares about her son, but she's not above making a snarky comment when he acts like an idiot. I love how she didn't mope around about it or anything. She was basically like, fine, if you want to screw yourself, go ahead. XD
"He completely lacks any charm." Hm, Sessmom. I think me and about 5 million other fangirls will disagree with you there. ;)
Ok, now we get to the Master of Hell. That is one creepy mofo. Ugh, the way his flesh seems to be hanging off him in places, and his fingernails?! Dude needs a manicure like whoa.
Final page. Wonderful shot of Rin and then Sesshomaru looking determined. "I'm bringing you back!!" So, so perfect. Ah, made my fangirly heart squee. I just love that once again we get to see how much Sesshomaru cares about Rin.
He's going to have a hard time explaining this to his mother though. XD At first he told her he went into the meidou just to kill the dog. But now he refused to leave hell just so he could go after Rin. Yeah, try explaining that one away! :D
