I'm in a hotel lobby, trying to tire myself out so I'll sleep on the way back home in a few hours... and OMG, I HAVE TO TELL THIS TO SOMEONE!!!

Just minutes ago... I heard someone say the words: "el jay" and "fic" and "slash" and "ship" and "fandom"!!! OUTLOUD. A real, flesh and blood person! You have no idea how amazingly weird this is to me ( Read more... )

Okay, beyond my jealousy that you get to go to NYC so much :p, this is really funny. I know once I was in a General Hospital fandom (I know), and I discovered there was a girl on the message boards who not only lived in Texas, but she was also an alumni of my university. We arranged it for her to come visit me at school for a day, and I don't know why, but it was kind of awkward. She was really sweet and I liked her, but I think it was one of those occasions where we were both far more shy in real life than we'd grown to be on the faceless boards. But it is freaky to see fandom and reality merge.

Do you remember when we used to talk on AIM and say that there needed to be a movie made about our fandom adventures? I was Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago and saw this book that was like, "My Adventures in Cult Fandom." I looked at it a little bit and thought it was just hilarious how much I knew I'd be able to relate to the experiences. I wanted to read on further because I imagine it would've been pretty dead-on throughout, and I probably would have bought it except for the fact that the author's particular experiences all surrounded Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was not a show I ever watched. But it is so interesting.

I was stunned the whole time. I would LOVE to have a friend or family member who was into it, but I don't think I could handle being one of those people who write: "My mom and I just finished this really cool Harry/Draco pr0n series we've been writing together. It's such a great bonding experience."

Dammit, somebody stole our book idea??? No matter. If Lost doesn't end with a pathetic squeak where nobody even remembers it exists, we'll try to cash in on the nostalgia and write our own adventures in fandom book. Fishy trolling my LJ, Gooseology, etc. We have a lot of stories to tell. :D

Well, you should hear Jen and I on the phone together sometimes. It is very strange to hear yourself say, "fanfic," "Jate," and all of our screennames out loud. It is fun having a real life friend who is into it, but it's also very, very weird. :p

But, um, yeah, sorry, the HP porn and slash is just... *shivers*

Yes. This book/movie idea is starting to come to fruition a little bit. Jen and I talked about it a little bit this weekend. She voiced my thoughts aloud when she said, "I see a kind of Little Miss Sunshine thing going on." It really could be a poignant character study if done right. I'm so glad you were my original co-collaborator on all this. :D
