I'm in a hotel lobby, trying to tire myself out so I'll sleep on the way back home in a few hours... and OMG, I HAVE TO TELL THIS TO SOMEONE!!!
Just minutes ago... I heard someone say the words: "el jay" and "fic" and "slash" and "ship" and "fandom"!!! OUTLOUD. A real, flesh and blood person! You have no idea how amazingly weird this is to me because I NEVER talk to anyone about fandom. Ever. Well, I told my brother once (the abridged version where I sort of left out the scarier aspects) and he couldn't stop laughing so that didn't last.
But... but... but!!! It finally happened. I went to check if the internet was finally back up and there she was, a lively Aussie girl my age, watching Supernatural (of all things) with her pal. And I think I made an offhand comment about what a shitty actor The One Who Didn't Use To Be In Gilmore Girls is (so defriend me, OK? :p) and how everyone on the internet loves him and she laughed and said you guys have great taste and... SOMEHOW... It happened. I think she mentioned LJ and I was startled and then she said "ship" and I had to sit down to keep from fainting.
We talked for some three hours. She's a Harry Potter FREAK. But she's as confuzzled about the popularity of slash as I am so apart from being one of those people who writes about the significance of fanfic in popular culture for their disertation (which... I can't even begin to explain why taking fanfic and fandom seriously weirds me out) she's actually remarkably aware of the divide between reality and fiction and obsessive in a cute way.
Other than that... I LOVE NY more than any tshirt could express, but I'm so tired and SO ready to do nothing but slack off and troll the internet the whole weekend.
I miss you! :-*
PS: OMG, at one point she actually said "Mary Sue" and I nearly choked on my water.
