I signed the petition to prosecute the man who murdered innocent and unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was walking down the street talking on the phone, the man who killed him was on neighborhood watch. I was at first, hesitant because I do not think that it will solve the larger problem of civilians creating armed coalitions because they're scared of the unfamiliar. I was, at first, hesitant to sign because I believe that education is more effective than incarceration. But incarceration is the justice system that our society has embraced. And I do believe, without question or hesitation, that George Zimmerman should be held accountable for his irresponsible and ignorant action. I believe that he should, absolutely, be prosecuted.
A version of the story of Trayvon's death at the hands of George Zimmerman:

My hope is that this story and this petition and the Million Hoodie March( which is taking place as I type in NYC) will draw a more public eye to the atrocious violence that is committed toward youth, and in particular young men of color. Violence in response to fear. Violence rooted in ignorance. My hope is that this tragedy can result in a step toward moving beyond violence and systemic oppression.
