A fifteen minute challenge that went unexpectedly. I got it just in at the minute mark, and I have no idea what to do with it. I don't think it will be expanded or even used, but it was fun to see where the idea took me.
The word is puppy.
“Don’t even think about it.” Lilly’s eyes narrowed. She knew he was going to ask. His mom had been making hints all though the chili cheese pizza dinner. His mom did not come right out and ask, but she knew he would.
“Come on, please?”
“No!”
“Please?”
Great. Here comes the pouting lip and the creased forehead and the knitted eyebrows. Of course, she couldn’t really see his eyebrows because his bangs were covering them. She folded her arms.
“Oliver, I said no.”
“Come on, Lilly… I’ll be your best friend…”
“I thought I was your best friend.”
“For now, but then you’d be my best friend forever.” He nodded his head, thinking more nodding meant more convincing. He was smiling now, forgetting the pouting lip.
“No.”
She watched the smile fall, and the pout reappeared. She hated that pout. He knew exactly how to stick out his lip to make her give in, but this time, she would not budge.
“Please?”
“For the last time, I am not helping out at you mom’s charity thing. Ask Sarah. She loves to raise money!”
“Okay, Sarah loves to raise money for sick kids or caged animals, beach clean ups and recycling companies. She wants to save the whales and the rainforest and find homes for all the lost kittens on the planet, but raising money for the new computers for the police station… I really don’t think that’s her thing.” Oliver put one hand on Lilly’s shoulder turning her to face him.
“No.”
His head hung down so he could look her in the eye, those bangs brushing his eyelashes. One of her hands twitched to brush them away, and she curled her fingers into a fist, letting her nails break the skin.
“Please?”
Now it wasn’t just the lip. It was the eyes. His stupid brown eyes that were so bright. Stupid puppy dog look. She could feel her resolve crumbling. She glanced away then her eyes landed back on his. He wasn’t even blinking, just staring at her with those sad eyes.
“Argh. Fine! Fine! What do I have to do?” She threw her arms up in defeat and leaned back into the familiar couch.
“Thanks, Lils, you’re the best!”
Suddenly his arms were around her, squeezing her, and for a moment she couldn’t breathe. When she did, her mind was full of Oliver.
Well, if this was what giving in to the puppy dog face would get her, it really wasn’t so bad.
