Chapter 99

After Baekhyun has agreed to Jongin’s unusual proposal, the latter has been unable to come back from a state of extreme euphoria, a smile permanently plastered on his face as they arrive at the cafeteria for dinner, as they listen to Sehun and Luhan share their good news, and as they walk back to their dorm.

Baekhyun doesn’t want to mind the younger boy anymore. Upon entering their room, he grabs a change of clothes and heads towards the bathroom for a shower.

When he’s done, he finds Jongin seated on the bed, watching him. As soon as their eyes meet, a goofy smile breaks out on the dancer’s face.

“What are you doing still seated there? It’s late already! I’m done now. You can go take a shower.” Baekhyun approaches Jongin and pokes his shoulder. However, the younger boy pulls him in for a hug abruptly and kisses him.

I shouldn’t have agreed… Baekhyun thinks bitterly. He’s now completely enamored with his imagined future. How will he even function properly after this?

After another kiss, Jongin gets up to grab his clothes and enters the bathroom.

The faint sound of water running fills the room when Baekhyun hears a knock on the door. As soon as he opens it, Chanyeol barges in and envelops the shorter boy in a hug, leveraging his height to press him down.

“Get your hands off me! You’re stunting my growth! I can’t breathe!” Baekhyun shouts as he struggles. He thinks to himself that this scenario has actually happened countless times already but Jongin has always appeared promptly to save him from Chanyeol. It’s too bad that Jongin is unavailable this time since he has just begun to shower.

He doesn’t really resent Chanyeol pressing on him. He’s used to it anyways, but for some reason he feels like his height is being tragically made fun of in the process.

Chanyeol lets go and sits on Baekhyun’s bed, a frown evident on his face. “Baekhyun, you have no idea how hard my life is right now. Sehun still hasn’t come home. I don’t know where he’s off to with Luhan. I’m so lonely, sitting in a cold and dark room by myself.”

“Hmm…” Baekhyun thinks: How should I comfort you? Where is Kyungsoo?

“By the way, where did you run off to after the closing ceremonies? You didn’t get to see Luhan with tears streaming down his face.” Chanyeol asks as he takes a sip of water from the glass on the desk.

“Oh, I have something to tell you.” Baekhyun remembers what he has been trying to tell the taller boy. “Today, Jongin told me that he wants us to get married in Holland and I said yes.”

“Oh. Congratulations then.” Chanyeol says calmly, taking another drink of water, which he promptly spits out a second later.

“What? You’re getting married? You’re still so young!”

You’re not my best friend for nothing. We have the same reaction! Baekhyun sighs and answers: “I know! But it’s too late now, Chanyeol. I can’t say no.”

“So he proposed just like that?” Chanyeol’s focus is starting to stray.

“Ha?”

“No rings? No flowers? No romantic candlelit dinner?” Chanyeol asks, confused. “And you still said yes?”

“Is this the main issue here?” Baekhyun shakes his head in frustration. “I’m not a girl. Why do I need a romantic proposal?”

“It’s still too simple, don’t you think?” Chanyeol continues. “Isn’t marriage a very important event? Isn’t it something that should be proposed at a suitable time and place?”

A few minutes after Baekhyun sends off Chanyeol who’s still mumbling about his opinions on the matter, Jongin comes out of the bathroom, drying his hair with a towel. Baekhyun is seated on the bed, reading a book.

“I think I heard someone come in?” Jongin asks.

“Chanyeol came over to grumble about Sehun abandoning friendship for love. I told him about us getting married.” Baekhyun answers calmly, expression unchanging. Jongin responds with a hum as he moves around the room. He realizes something’s off after a few steps.

“Hmm? Baekhyun hyung, why are you on my bed?”

“Oh… I just didn’t feel like sleeping on my bed.” Baekhyun replies.

“Oh…” Jongin echoes and thinks: So should I sleep on your bed or sleep with you on my bed? After an intense mental battle, Jongin walks towards his own bed resolutely.

He sees Baekhyun move a little closer to the edge, giving Jongin space, all the while still focused on his book.

Jongin climbs stiffly on the bed one leg at a time, and then moves inch by inch closer to Baekhyun hesitantly, feeling the latter’s body heat. Jongin has no idea how he should lie down on his own bed.

He continues drying his hair, sneaking looks at Baekhyun who is still busy reading. He thinks his heart is about to jump out of his chest.

This goes on for a while until Baekhyun finally puts the book down, stretching his arms. “What time is it? Are you done drying your hair, Jongin? Go to sleep.”

Jongin responds with a hum, finding his throat very dry. He forces his stiff legs to move so that he can get up and turn off the lights. After that, he returns to face Baekhyun who seems to have no intention of going back to his bed. The older boy yawns carelessly and settles down on Jongin’s pillow.

There’s only one pillow! What should I do? Jongin starts to tremble.

He lies down gently on the edge of the pillow. After much hesitance, he moves a few inches closer. When he feels Baekhyun’s warm breath on his face, he shudders and retreats abruptly, breaking out in cold sweat.

Baekhyun makes his usual puppy noises, looking like he’s about to fall asleep. By instinct, he leans in closer towards the source of heat.

Realizing that Baekhyun is suddenly merely centimeters away, Jongin takes a deep breath, trying his hardest to calm down. He then stretches his arms to pull Baekhyun into his chest.

Baekhyun hums at the gesture, moving his arms and legs until he’s completely settled in Jongin’s embrace.

As Baekhyun snuggles closer, Jongin feels his nervousness subside, replaced by a warm and wonderful blanket of gentle happiness.

He frees an arm to make sure Baekhyun is covered fully by the blanket, and then he buries his face in Baekhyun’s soft hair, inhaling the familiar scent of lemons as he drifts off to sleep, lips curled up in a smile.

Chapter 100

“Those two little punks Kim Jongin and Oh Sehun haven’t been putting in enough practice hours lately! How should I handle this? Our teacher’s starting to blame me!”

Yixing grumbles to Luhan and Baekhyun seated across him in their usual table at the cafeteria. Next to him, Yifan nods as he peels Yixing’s shrimp for him.

“Hmm… lately, you mean?”

Baekhyun feels a little guilty. He glances at Luhan and sees the older boy in a similar state.

“Ever since they met the two of you, they’ve been losing interest in dance!” Yixing continues to complain. “They’ve gotten worse now, even missing dance practice! This is unacceptable!”

“Yixing hyung, shouldn’t you talk to the two of them about this?” Baekhyun tries to distance himself from the blame.

“Stop it. You think I don’t know what’s been happing to you two couples? In the closing ceremonies, Sehun confessed in front of the whole school and got Luhan, while Jongin proposed to you. Although it’s a proposal for four years later, you still accepted, right?” Yixing balls his hands into fists. “So now, the two of them are completely delirious with happiness. How can they concentrate on dance? Their brains are filled with thoughts of you!”

Luhan looks somewhere far away while Baekhyun stares at his shoelaces.

“Don’t pretend that you don’t hear me talking! You two are responsible!” Yixing slams his fist on the table.

Now it’s Luhan’s turn to stare at his shoelaces while Baekhyun watches a spinning fan with feigned interest.

Yixing feels like kneeling down in front of these two. “I’m begging you, okay? There’s a welcome party for freshmen coming up. The dance club is busy rehearsing for the program. They’re both main dancers. Can you please consider what I’m going through? Do you think it’s easy for me being the dance club president?”

“Fine! Okay! It’s our fault, Yixing. We’ll talk to them, okay?”

Luhan raises his hands in surrender, probably agreeing that Sehun spends too much time on him. Baekhyun ponders this and realizes that Jongin seems to be almost always around him. He concurs: “Yixing hyung, Yifan hyung, we’ll talk to them later. The welcome party is important.”

“Good.” Yixing puts a hand on his chest. “My life is so hard right now. It’s good that you two understand me, right, Yifan?”

In response, Yifan puts a shelled shrimp in Yixing’s mouth.

When Baekhyun returns to their dorm, Jongin is already home, heating milk in their little kitchen.

“Jongin-ah? Come over here.” Baekhyun waves his hand as he starts changing out of his dirty clothes. The younger boy puts down his glass of milk happily and sits down next to Baekhyun obediently.

“Jongin, hyung wants to talk to you about… Umm… Yixing hyung mentioned that you and Sehun… Okay let’s not talk about Sehun… Yixing hyung told me about you not going to dance rehearsal.” Baekhyun tries hard to organize his thoughts.

Jongin answers, looking perplexed: “Yes, because Sehun and I are already familiar with the dance routine we’ve been practicing lately, so we missed a couple of practices. Like last time, for Chanyeol hyung’s birthday.”

“Okay… As a member of the dance club, don’t you think that’s not really a good thing to do?” Baekhyun struggles to continue. “For example, as president, Yixing hyung would be put in a difficult spot? For example, other members won’t be too happy about it if your absences become more frequent?”

Jongin blinks.

“Hyung, Yixing hyung told you that Sehun and I are always absent from practice?” Jongin asks after a pause.

“I guess you can say that…” Baekhyun responds vaguely.

“The dance club’s choreography…” Jongin tries to downplay it but fails. “It’s a little easy for me and Sehun. I’m not saying it’s too easy, but...”

Baekhyun puts an arm around the dancer’s shoulder proudly. “You don’t have to be modest. We all know you’re good. But Jongin, if you don’t train every day, what if you lose your abs? I’ll resent you for that.”

Jongin becomes speechless for a few minutes, and then he replies: “Okay, I won’t let that happen.”

What if hyung really does resent me? This needs to be remedied as soon as possible.

“Jongin-ah…” Baekhyun nudges his head on Jongin’s neck, smiling. “Your mom told me before that you’ve only persisted on a few things in your life, and dance was your very first commitment. You’re such a talented dancer. Don’t abandon it because of me.”

“I won’t… It’s just that all my other commitments are too insignificant compared to you.” Jongin bites his lower lip as he glances at Baekhyun. The latter touches his face and says: “When did you learn to be such a sweet talker? Jongin, do you understand my point?”

“I understand.” Jongin answers glumly. “Hyung, do you think I’m being too bothersome?”

“Why would I think that? It’s just that… Jongin, I want you to know that I don’t want to become the center of your life. This is your life. Or else how would you manage without hyung?” Baekhyun advices him wisely but the younger boy has already started over-thinking.

“Hyung!” Jongin’s eyebrows furrow in anger. “Hyung, how can you say that? In the future I’ve mapped out in my head, you’re there every minute and every second, okay?”

“Hyung will be there, but I can’t dictate your life.” Baekhyun continues calming him down. “Although you don’t have a lot of commitments in life, you should still persist on the few ones that you do have. Before hyung came into your life, you only had dance, right?”

“But now, besides dance, I also have hyung.” Jongin says in a soft voice. “I don’t even remember how I spent the days before I met you…”

“Wrong.” Baekhyun laughs.

“Ha?” Jongin peers at Baekhyun in confusion, not really following.

“The sequence is wrong, Jongin.” Baekhyun looks at Jongin with gentle and sincere eyes. “It should be besides hyung, you also have dance.”

Jongin opens his mouth, not understanding the difference between the two.

“You will never lose hyung.” Baekhyun speaks as if he’s making a vow. “Hyung will always be by your side. I’m not going anywhere. I will always be part of your future.”

“Hyung…”

“Hyung will stand on the same spot, waiting for you. You don’t need to sacrifice anything for hyung. Your life could be so much better, right? With dance, you’d become rusty if you don’t do it often. But that’s not the same case with hyung. Hyung will always be yours.”

Jongin, do you understand what hyung means?

Maybe you feel a little insecure because of all those days in the past that you’ve secretly liked me from afar, so you’re been giving everything you have, loving me the best way you can. This love has already made you sacrifice so much. You’ve even set aside dance temporarily.

But you’re still young. You’re only eighteen years old. Your life has just begun.

I just want to give you security and help you understand that I will never leave you. There’s no need to worry. Go ahead and give yourself a chance to live spectacularly.

Besides me, you still have dance.

Besides me, you can still have so much more.

Jongin’s eyes gradually become clear and bright. The corners of his lips slowly lift into a smile, as if understanding the deeper meaning hidden behind Baekhyun’s unspoken words.

Baekhyun also smiles, hands cupping Jongin’s face as he stares into the younger boy’s eyes, fingers brushing against his sideburns.

It seems that suddenly there’s so many things Baekhyun wants to say but can’t. He can only sit and absorb the feeling of this younger boy’s presence in front of him. After a pause, he finally manages to speak.

“I should have told you this a long time ago. Jongin, it must have been so hard for you during those days when I had no clue what you were feeling for me.”

“Jongin, I actually regret not knowing you earlier. At least, if I had known what you were feeling for me when you were still in third year of junior high, maybe I would have approached you openly and said with a smile: ‘Hey, I hear you’re in love with me. Do you want to try being together?’”

P.S. Surprise! The fic in itself has 100 chapters but it has extra ficlets for Kray, Hunhan, and Kaibaek, and the other characters, some taking place before this fic started and some after. I'll do those too but I might be a little slow in translating them so please be patient. Thank you again for understanding and supporting this fic!
