Flowery Twats (Just Like That)

I honestly make a very conscious effort to try and update more often than just once a month but most of the time, I just. can. not. be ARSED. And anyway I can never think of anything else to type other than shitty, paltry reviews. So, with that in mind, let's get this nonsense over with before my life ends up becoming the plot of a second-rate Bukowski novel (only without the women).

FILM REVIEWS FOR YOU TO DISPUTE AT MY (OR PREFERABLY, YOUR) LEISURE:

Gone Baby Gone: Since it's written by Dennis Lehane who I know only as a writer for The Wire, I couldn't help but compare the two in almost every aspect. The major difference between that divine series and this not-so-divine-but-still-damned-good movie is that this is a whodunit, whereas HBO's finest comes from the From Hell school of drama (in which the audience finds out whodunit about ten minutes in since that was never the real focus of the thing). Ed Harris is up to his old tricks but Morgan Freeman gets played against type. Nice.

Man on Wire: As with last year's In the Shadow of the Moon, this is one of those documentaries that fills you up with joy at witnessing human endevour on such a grand scale and how brave men conquer the seemingly impossible through lots of research and even more practice (plus it's also very, very funny). Quite possibly the best thing out of France since Pierrot le fou. Trust Al-Qaeda to have to get all upset at this and feel they have to go one better than him. Cockbags.

Hellboy 2: I still don't know whether I prefer this to the first one or not. The plot wasn't really that engrossing (elves vs humans = meh) but Perlman was on top form (even if his one liners seemed to be a little less on the spot than they are in the comic) and I really enjoyed Seth MacFarlane's Johann. Didn't really care for the whole Liz relationship but the bit with the forest god made up for it. A good night out, I thought.

WALL·E: I can't remember the last time I saw a children's film with barely any dialogue for the first half hour. I actually went back to see this again with my little sister-daft cow spilt the popcorn before we even got in the theatre-and she enjoyed this as much as I. It's not quite as misanthropic/anti-consumerist/eco-terrorist as some have said, but I did come very close to crying at some of its more tender moments and that's just my cross to bear*. I also love EVE and want to have her gleaming iPod-looking babies.

And 1 final note:

Although I was sad to see the end of Ennis' run on Punisher MAX-and we must remember that all good killing sprees must come to an end-I was overjoyed to hear that Dominic "McNulty" West will be playing Jigsaw in the new film adaptation. I might actually show up for this one.
