Disclaimer: The story and the characters belong to Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios. This is written purely for fun and I make no financial profit by writing this.
Author's Note: This chapter is very short, but I felt that a quick glance at how Thor is doing might be in order. I don't know why, but somehow I get this feeling that he might have this weakness for sentimentality in him, which I think is very evident in this chapter. But hey, I never promised anything else than some sappy fluffiness! This little ficlet of mine is all about wangst and moaning!

Chapter 2
Niemand gibt uns eine Chancen
Doch können wir siegen
Für immer und immer
Und wir sind dann Helden
Für einen tag
- Helden by David Bowie
In Asgard, Thor Odinson had always been known as a loud and dauntless young god. In earlier years it had seemed like nothing could really suppress his spirits, and even though he might be formidable when angry, he usually did not brood and sulk over things for long. And even though the people of Asgard would never have wanted to offend their king Odin, many of them had secretly held the notion that Thor had been childish, arrogant and vain. He had loved being the center of attention, loved receiving the respect of the men and the love of the women. Yet no one would ever have questioned his skills as a warrior.
After his short banishment to Earth, Thor had changed radically. He was more silent, more thoughtful. He did not seem to thrive in crowds and the glory of his mighty deeds, but rather followed his father and for once strived to learn how to become a good king for his people.
Not many knew the full facts of what had happened back in Earth, but everyone knew this much: Loki was gone and Thor was very much mourning for his brother. Something he found hard to confess even to his friends was that he felt responsible for what had happened.
Day afted day, night after night he spent mulling over everything. What had he done wrong? And more importantly, what could he have done differently? Had there ever been any chance of changing the things and bringing back the brother he had loved? It was not knowing that was so painful.
And if he did not think about his brother, it was her.
Jane.
Thor had never been the one for grand thoughts. He would have been the first one to admit that he was not as wise as his father or as thoughtful as Loki. So, he did not exactly know what it was that he had for the woman. He recognized it was not the same ancient loyality and affection between his parents, but that did not really matter. The only thing he really knew was that he wanted to see Jane again.
He had had his share of sweethearts back in Asgard, but Thor was certain it was not exactly the same thing as what had happened with Jane. Her sense of humour, her beautiful face, her painfully adorable awkwardness... And the way she would smile at him! The sight of her smile, when she looked at him, it was probably one of the most beautiful things he had seen in his life. Thor might not know her very well, but he wanted to. No, he needed to. That much he had known from the moment he had closed his eyes with the claws of death gripping at him, and her face the last thing in his eyes... the last image he had expected to take with him into death. That one image - that desperation in her eyes when she had wanted him to stay - remained with him no matter what he did and where he went.
Too bad there were entire worlds between the two of them. And Bifrost was gone.
At least there was one way he could see her, in a sense at least. Heimdal’s eyes saw to all the nine worlds, and he could see Jane as clearly as Thor saw things near him. Every day, Thor would go and see Heimdal on the broken end of Bifrost, ask about her. Sometimes it felt even painful to hear about her and not be able to see her for himself, but it was better than not knowing at all. And the knowledge she was looking for him made it a little bit more bearable. At least he knew she had not just forgotten about him and carried on with her life. She would have every right to, after all - he could not just expect her to hold on to him after such a short time spent together, after one desperate kiss...
Mighty Thor thinking of a mortal woman. How odd indeed.
But there was hope now - to see her again. With the mightiest men and women of Asgard had been gathered together to repair Bifrost and to regain the passage between the worlds. They did not know when, or if, it would ever be ready. Could the Rainbow Bridge ever be fixed? Thor hoped so.
And without hope, what else one really had?
