Grief is a strange thing. I've experienced it in lots of way in my short life - my mom died suddenly a little over 11 years ago, and my step mom has been slowly fading from leukemia since about the same time. For some people it's easier to start the mourning process early: if you begin grieving before the person has passed, you have less to cope with afterward. Theoretically, anyway. But I think I tend more towards your method... that is, I try to enjoy what time I have left with a person, rather than dwelling on the inevitable end.

I'm so, so sorry about everything that's happening. Death is awful, but it does, at least, teach us to value the things we have, like a caring family and a great fiance, in your case. There are real and true points of light in your life. The darkness just makes those all the more clear. And I can tell that you're already realizing that - it's not callousness, it's just a different way of coping.
