Happy Valentine's Day!
Good morning! Our Kung Fu Panda wants to give you his love.
You wouldn't know from watching the above video that KFP has been sick this week: his second cold ever, with only a few days in between. However, despite interfering with his sleep, particularly early in the evening, the cold has been relatively mild. I should know: I have it, too. But the Improv Lawyer agreed to watch him for us Saturday night so that we could celebrate Valentine's Day. According to her, he did well that evening but had some trouble getting to sleep.
We had reservations at Yangming, which I learned about recently because they were featured on an ABC News report as the top Chinese restaurant in the country, according to some poll. Deliberately, we had made the reservations early, figuring that we could catch a movie afterwards. It also worked out that we missed the busiest time, which started about the time we left.
At The Gryphon's suggestion, we ordered the Chef's Surprise Dinner, which consists of dishes selected by the chef. This started out with a small salad of greens and three types of appetizers: a shrimp roll, seasoned shrimp, and a veggie roll (all of them bite sized portions). This was followed by a delicious soup which had shrimp, scallops, crab, carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms, as well as egg. Looking at the menu, I believe that was their Seafood Vegetable Soup for Two. The main course consisted of two entrees we could share: Grilled Asian Spice-Rubbed Rack of Lamb and a scallops dish in a mango sauce that had a lot of kick. Dessert was a sampler of three little squares of different kinds of mousses. Delicious!
We've gone out to restaurants with KFP but haven't had a dining experience like this for a long time, especially since we each had a glass of wine with dinner.
Afterward, we saw Tangled, which turned out to be the perfect Valentine's Day selection. It's a 3D animated Disney movie that is trying to both reclaim the glory days of Disney animation and appeal to a modern audience. They achieved both, thanks to fantastic voice work (Mandy Moore as Rapunzel did an excellent job, as did the other actors), combined with first-rate character designs and animation. The movie combined the magic and beauty one would expect from a princess movie, along with the swashbuckling adventure of a movie meant for boys. I think we'll have to add it to our collection for when KFP is old enough to appreciate it!
We arrived home exactly at 10 p.m., the time we'd given the Improv Lawyer. She was holding him, in his pajamas, and walking him back and forth in the upstairs hallway, trying to get him to sleep. She said she'd had him down in the crib three times already and each time, he had woken up. Apparently, he had been asking for Mama, but that seemed to be primarily at feeding times. He has learned to associate the word with me, but I'm not sure whether he knows it means me as a person and not me as a walking milk producer!
That's OK. Even though I had fun out on the town, I missed him, too.
Moral:
There might be a reason the words "mama" and "milk" both start with "mmmm."
