Uni

Uni is pretty full on. I do 40 hours in 4 days and I have three days off. I'm not sure if I will have time to work. I love the course, the quality seems to be high and there is a lot of variety in lesson material. We are studying the physics of colour (colorimetry) and I am the only one in the room full of designers who appears to understand it. We are also learning design and a range of other things. I've never taken a class that is so.... designy.

That's Alba and I checking the colour of the floor.

It's design week this week (fluorisalone) and we have attended events as part of the course. In addition I've spent every night going to the different displays with my classmates. It's been intense!

Design week, otherwise known as the furniture fair, is the biggest event of the year in Milan. Milan is essentially the world centre of design, so you can only imagine how impressive the event is. A lot of it is right on the edge. At night the bars and show rooms come alive, and people seeking wine, cheese, and inspiration sprawl out into the streets.

The coolest thing I saw was probably the work by a collection of artists that do indoor and outdoor furniture. I have never been so impressed by furniture. The event was exclusive, but we were invited through uni. We had been sent to meet one designer in particular, but he was within a VIP section within the VIP section. Talk about.... Milan.

Seriously, this material was amazing. It was multicoloured.

Peugeot had 3d printers and scanners and were using them to make amethysts, quartz and a bunch of other crystals. They were combining very realistic 3D printed rocks and other "natural" materials with metals and other actual natural materials. They also, for some reason, had a person playing a piano that looked a bit like a car, in a dark room. This room had white tubes everywhere that resembled piano stringst hat had coloured lights projeted onto them that made them appear like lasers. The lights changed with the music.

There is a camera in the middle of this.

The first day seemed a bit like a hen's party. We got free champagne, chocolates, coffee, and even got fake eyelashes made from paper.

An the second day we went to another cool area, and Beatriz and I went through a sense library and got to chose the items that reminded us most of our journey. We also went to Vogue Ceramic, which is a possible company for our internships, and learnt all about their handmade tiles - which was more awesome than it sounds.

It's pretty new for me to spend my time looking at colours, finishes, materials and other aesthetics instead of busily taking notes on physiology, chemistry and biophysics. I have a million brochures that I have to organise and look through. One of our tasks this week was to analyse all the designs, and predict the new trends for the next 5 years. I barely recognise myself!
