Erin

For 3 years we've had a student at our school named Erin. I have never been her primary teacher, but I know pretty much all students one way or another because I have to do testing and subbing, etc. and get to know them in passing. I call her Beautiful because no one else thinks so. With a low self-esteem like hers already at 7, she needs to know that one person sees her beauty. (BTW, Korea is brutally honest so if you are overweight, everyone is going to make sure you know.)

Last Monday was Erin's birthday. Her mother, father, and little brother bought her a cake and took her out for dinner. They had a good little party. They came home in time for homework and bedtime. Dad sat down on the sofa to watch TV. Erin and her brother went to sleep. Mom soon followed.

At about midnight, mom stirred and noticed her husband wasn't in bed. She called for him. He didn't answer.

She got up and found him sitting straight up exactly like before in the living room with his eyes rolled back in his head. She called an ambulance, woke Erin and her brother up, and rushed to the hospital. He was officially declared dead at the hospital, though he had been dead at least an hour. (Ambulances work different here. They don't have paramedics. They are just meat wagons: throw and go.)

Autopsy revealed he had an aneurysm and was dead instantly at the moment it happened. He was in his early 40s, a tall and handsome man, relatively fit.

My heart is broken to hear this. And to make it worse, I had to give her the speaking placement test today because she missed it on Friday because she was at her father's funeral. When I saw her, I gave her a big hug and a big kiss on the cheek and said, "Hey, Beautiful! How's it going?" She gave a smile and said "Fine".

One of the questions was "What 2 things did you do for the (Chinese) New Year?" She thought for a moment, got teary eyed and said, "I played with my cousins and ate dumpling soup."

My heart goes out to her and her family.
