Death Penalty Week

Mar 02, 2006 11:37

Supposedly it's some kind of Death Penalty Week. I read about it in my Cornell Catholic Bulletin. That's why there were all the liberal hippies passing out fliers in Ho Plaza this week. The liberal activists up here are starting to get on my nerves. First, I was in the grocery store and this family behind me in line was talking about when they ( Read more... )

My arguments aren't biased. All of my thoughts and beliefs are based on analysis, thought, and reflection. The only statistics I stated were facts in the very first anti-Reagan comment.

...Nobody has EVER beaten the Muslims in the Middle East. Do you think that bombing hell out of them would help us? No fucking way. It would fuck us. If you nuked them, you would drastically reduce quality of life in this country. That's the most dangerous, inane, horrible idea/thought/belief that you uninformed Republicans hold. It's that train of thought that destroys my faith in this country. No american pride? Are you joking? I care enough about this country to argue for it's betterment. Unfortunately, however, it appears that we have a party and a fad in our country that seeks to disrupt the entire world. If you nuke the middle east, there are terrorist attacks here every day. 9/11 level damage every day. If not worse. You enrage every muslim on the planet... as opposed to the <1% of the muslim world that actively seeks to damage us. If Bush decided to nuke the middle east, and I knew about it beforehand, I would pray to god that someone assassinated him before he could give the final order.

Okay, Smithwick. Keep telling yourself that. Make friends with the Muslim world. Pussy foot around like you liberals do. Don't take any action. Whatever. This is a fruitless argument. No one's going to change anyone else's opinions. And p.s. I am not uninformed. I was the President and Cofounder of the Teenage Republicans Club at South Fork and then the President of the County-wide Teenage Republicans Club. But okay. Again, whatever you say.

I know 1 informed republican in the whole of Martin County. Being president of a republican club in Martin County simply makes you the pide piper of ignorance. I've been discussing things like this statewide for 3 years. There are respectable conservatives, conservatives that I like and can banter with without hostility. But not in Martin County. Martin County Republicans are Republican because mommy and daddy said they should be, or because they think all liberals are tree-huggers, or some stupid shit like that. Teenagers in general don't know shit... save for a select few.

Besides, I have little to no respect for the intellectualism of South Fork. I was originally destined to go there, and to a degree, I'm glad I didn't... I'm sure you know all the stereotypes of South Fork. You're helping to reinforce them with every comment you add :)

Well, I think I can help prove the intellectualism of South Fork... considering I go to a prestigious ivy league school, majoring in the #1 paying undergraduate major upon graduation, and still scoring well above the mean in every class. I have put way more research and dedication into the Republican party than I'm sure any other "teenager" you know. But I don't need to defend my beliefs to you. As far as I'm concerned, you definitely represent all the stereotypes that liberals hold.

Not only does it make you a bad person, but it refutes your previous statement about abortion.

I'm positive the world would be a much better place if you were an aborted fetus.

In what capacity do I present liberal stereotypes? That I don't want to go into other countries and attack them for no reason?

I'm fairly moderate. I have some republican beliefs (example: Right to bear arms. I'm not big on gun control. It's cool with me.) My beliefs are not steadfast to the democratic party, as yours appear to be. My beliefs are rooted in freedom and human rights. I belief everything possible should be done to promote individual freedoms in our country. Do I think everyone should walk around with an uzi or assault rifle? No. But should we be allowed to own one? Certainly. I dislike censorship. We should be able to say whatever we please. I'm not a huge fan of abortion, but it should be an option that mothers have. It's *THEIR* unborn child, they can do with it as they please. It's not the government's business. Gay marriage should be legal too; it should be allowed and recognized by government. No difference between homosexuals and heterosexuals besides bedroom activity. I do believe, however, that churches should be able to regulate who they do and do not allow to marry within their church. Shouldn't be forced.

There are plenty of people at Ivy League schools that I'm more astute than. Were it not for my laziness in high school, I'd be Ivy League. Without a doubt. Although, I'd be MIT or Harvard. I don't really like the state of New York. Boston is far superior.

You sure haven't proven that you've put any research into it. All you've proven is that you're hostile and warlike, and your goal is to bomb any country that you don't like into oblivion. You sound exactly like a Muslim extremist, come to think of it. Kill the infidels!

I think *everyone* should have to defend their beliefs. Our country is an administrative mess because nobody calls anyone else on their bullshit. Nobody questions anything. Nobody pays attention, nobody cares. This goes for Republicans and Democrats both. Everyone should have to defend themselves so we can root out bullshit.

I've gotten sick of the dumb shit people say. I'm not being polite any longer when people say stupid things. If you think I'm just going after you, you're wrong. Anytime I hear people, democrats or republicans alike, spewing ignorant, repugnant shit, I've stopped and slammed them. In the halls at school, in the posts of livejournal. Doesn't matter; I don't discriminate.

Simply stunning... you assume liberals are lazy... why? because we value people over profit? Do you really believe that going to an over rated school makes you better than everyone else? Do you really believe that making more money than a teacher makes you smarter than that teacher? Do you really believe that because your father's bank account has more 0's than my fathers you're better than me? 'Tis a bad time we live in....

DO NOT pretend that you know my family, first of all. Both of my parents came from broken, liberal homes that never had enough food on the table. But they worked hard. Neither went to college, but started their own business. I know that going to an "over-rated school" doesn't make me "smarter." I use my own Dad as an example. He's one of the smartest people I know, and his schooling consists of a 2 Year Degree at PBCC. Both of my parents--especially my Dad--could've fallen into the "liberal stereotype." When I say this, I mean, the people who believe that they can't change their situations because that's what they were born into. They end up on welfare... unemployment... disability... It has nothing to do with my school or my father's bank account. I'm going here, because I wanted to prove that I could be with the best of the best and make it. My parents are taking out tons of loans for me to be here, but they support me every step of the way. Because they realize the value of an education--as they didn't have the opportunity to get one (lack of parental support... money... etc.). It would've been a lot easier on them if I had gone to an in-state school, but what would that have proved? Teachers are not dumb. Teachers are liberals because they feel underappreciated and underpaid and somehow that's the republicans fault. I've known 3 republican teachers in my lifetime and those 3 happened to be my favorite. Not because of their political views, but because they had been out in the real world and realized that teaching is a good deal... lots of vacations... months off at summer... working with children... with the future... My cousin is in college to become a teacher, and one of my best friends is becoming a teacher. I don't think I'm better than everyone else. I think that I'm more ambitious, and I do value people. That's why I never want to have to worry about money so I don't have to go around stealing the hard-earned taxpayer's money with welfare. Okay... must write an essay on Merchant of Venice...

And you you manage only to show the absolute ignorance that Republicans have when it comes to liberals, the way you cling to homespun stereotypes rather than learning for yourself.

Welfare doesn't go to a large junk of the population, and you can't live off of it. It's a program that helps poor families when someone loses a job, a family can be on welfare for a limited time, and the ammount of money they recieve can't support a family of 4 for that time. Unemployment is due to a lack of jobs available to the people who need them, not due to laziness. If there's no job in this country for unskilled workers, it's not the worker's fault, it's because Reagan made is so damn easy for those jobs to be sent to China or India, meaning that they don't have the means of taking out loans to send their children through college, meaning their children wont get the education you're recieving and they can open their own business (not knowing how to do so, or even that that's an option) or they can live the life of their parents. Disability is due to a person getting injured on the job, and so they can't work. If you lose an arm because your boss didnt think it was necessary to make the factory safe, that should mean that you don't get to eat anymore?

Teachers are overwhelmingly liberals, not because they're underpaid and under valued, but because they recognize the ridiculousness of Republican programs, like vouchers, we'll take money away from public schools so the public schools will do better! or Jeb's FCAT, if we give money to the better schools, the bad schools will do better! or Bush's "No Child Left Behind", if we give money to private schools, all schools will do better! Teacher's spend their time dealing with the details, not with the taglines, soundbites and propoganda of politicians; that's why they're generally liberal. I've known 3 Republican teachers before college as well: 2 changed their party to Democrat during Bush's presidency and the last was Balogh, and anyone who had Balogh knows that the world is not just... if the world was just, Balogh would've been Schiavo'ed.

As for stealing the hard-earned tax payer's money, you should be talking about Enron, Worldcom, Halliburton, hell, Bill Gates pays a smaller % of his earnings in taxes than my mother. Bill Gates makes millions every day, my mother makes less than 35,000 per year... that would be due to Reagan's tax cuts by the way.

You're perfectly right about welfare, unemployment and disability. That's what they're meant to accomplish. They're supposed to help people get back on their feet in times of trouble. It's supposed to be a back-up plan. But way too often people milk these opportunities and then only find work when the well starts running dry. And disability. Disability is a great thing - if you lose an arm... are mentally handicapped... etc... - but disability is greatly abused in our country. I know MULTIPLE people who are on disability, and really do not need to be.

As for jobs, there are jobs out there. If someone wants to get a job, they can find one. The problem is that too many people think that they're "too good" for the jobs that they're appropiate for and thus claim they can't find work.

As for education, "No Child Left Behind" was bipartisanly voted in, and it's main objective is not to give money to private schools. That is ignorant. The four pillars of "No Child Left Behind" are accountability for results, more choices for parents, greater local control and flexibility, and an emphasis on doing what works based on scientific research. As for the FCAT, all it does is make schools work harder to bring up their "grade." And their "grades" are based on each school's improvement. Going to SF showed me how well the FCAT worked. We had a lot of people who didn't even speak English taking the FCAT and yet we still did well. Sure, we had to put more effort into it, but those kids who didn't know English learned more than they would've had there been no standards. Teachers don't like the FCAT because they feel they have to "teach to the test," and I don't like that either, but what do you suggest they do to test them? Standardized tests aren't perfect, but they aren't many options.

As for your mom and Bill Gates... I'm not sure how he pays a smaller percentage of his earnings... according to the 2005 tax brackets... depending on your mother's marital status, the highest she would pay would be the 25% bracket (it'd be either the 15% or 25% bracket)... whereas Bill Gates would be in the 35% bracket. And since Bill Gates makes WAYY more than the "base tax" amount, a MUCH higher percentage of his income is taxed. Thus, your last statement doesn't work out... Please enlighten me...

Of course people are going to abuse the system, that's part of what defines the human species, try to get the most with the least amount of effort. But to criticize the programs themselves is absurd, criticize the people abusing the system; criticize the reason people have to live on Welfare, why get a job when minimum wage only pays marginally better? A recent study found that there is not one county in the US where the average price for rent or monthly mortgage payments on minimum wage is less than or equal to the 33% that economists recomend. In most places in the US, you can't even pay the monthly housing payments on minimum wage.

As for jobs, there are jobs out there at McDonalds, at Wendy's, at Blockbuster. There are plenty of minimum wage jobs out there... do you honestly think a parent, two parents even, can support a family of four on minimum wage? Of course not.

"No Child Left Behind" was voted in at a time when Democrats in government were afraid to stand up against Bush because of the power he gained after the 9/11 attack and his invasion of Iraq. Ask any public school teacher... it's done nothing. Your FCAT arguement doesn't even address the issue at hand. Grading schools is fine, even positive at times, please by all means establish standards, but the way FCAT is run is it's fault. School's funding is determined by how well that school does on the test. An A school gets mre money than an F school. The result is that F schools cant afford microscopes, while A schools continue to be A schools. The result of eliminated the financial aspect of FCAT would be that schools no longer are forced to teach the test, and are instead encouraged to *teach*. Then state money to schools that educate poor counties. We were lucky being in Martin County, we lived in the 2nd richest county in Florida, Jupiter Island pumped huge amounts of money into our school system, AND YET TEACHERS STILL COMPLAINED ABOUT TEACHING IN UNDERFUNDED CLASSROOMS! Imagine what it's like to be in an F school, in a poor neighborhood where the state is punishing your for having never recieved an adequate education.

The tax bracket is simple, the first x thousand you make is taxed at the first %, the next x thousand is at the next %, then the next so many thousand at the next %... then there is a cap on the final tax bracket as to how much Bill Gates has to pay. The result? Bill Gates makes millions every day... but all the money he makes above a certain amount isn't taxed at all, because he's already well over the taxcap... the result? He pays 35% on his taxes, until that 35% = about $150,000 if I remember correctly. Let's be generous, and say that he paid about that much in all the other tax brackets combined, meaning he paid about $300,000. In order to pay less than my mother he would've had to make more than $1.2million last year... oh wait... he did.
