is this thing on?

this week has been both one of the shittiest and one of the best weeks of my life. it has been shitty for a staggering variety of reasons, encompassing work, death, friendship, battles with psychological inadequacies, and having to come to grips with profoundly disappointing aspects of my personality.

it has been good for pretty much only one reason, and that is because of the project i've been working on at work. without going into too much detail, i've had the opportunity to work with a small team of coworkers on a game idea that i've been wanting to realize for a very long time. the game is being created solely as a creative exercise, and not intended to ever be released to commercially, and so was not beholden to the usual pressures of mass market appeal. i posted the back-story of this game a few days ago (which became much better in subsequent revisions), but the game idea actually had its origins in some thoughts i've been developing for a very long time on the subject of communication. those ideas were first put down in words in my LJ back in early 2003.

the central concept is the fundamental but not often perceived limitations of communication as we know it today. the post itself is unfortunately a rambling and incoherent mess, but the idea itself is nonetheless one that is very important to me, and i am very grateful that i was able to pursue its expression in a form more ambitious than a livejournal post.

additionally, this was the first game that i've ever taken to completion that was, at least in its core concept, of my own design. it almost makes up for all the misery that that i've had to endure this past week.

anyway, i get on a plane to london in about 14 hours on my way to see Sonic Youth play Daydream Nation live, start to finish, on the eve of my 28th birthday. things could be worse.
