mitchellstills challenges #26 and #27

Here are the results from the two challenges held over the holiday period at mitchellstills . I won a few categories as well which made me happy. Both of these challenges were tougher for me. I tend to find it easier when the scope isn't as broad. What I end up doing is imposing a narrow scope on myself which I did by making myself use stills from a single episode for each challenge. (With one exception.)

Challenge #26 was very interesting. Setting icons to lyrics. Of course this means the use of text so it was something I was going to have to improve upon, and even now I think I have a ways to go with my use of text. Some of the text on the other icons were spectacularly well integrated.

The song I chose was 'Kryptonite' by 3 Doors Down, which I've mentioned previously on this journal. I chose it for the obvious associations it has for me with my stories and Sam/Cam in general. One thing I decided to do was to add a motif to each of the icons which would identify the song, so in the corner of each are two stamped letters which end up spelling out Kryptonite. I doubt anyone noticed. =P I have versions of the icons somewhere without the little stamps as well.

I chose to use stills from the episode 'Collateral Damage', not only to inject the Sam/Cam, but also because it fits in quite well with the spirit of the song at times. I especially wanted to use the shot of his hands because sometimes I feel as if it's important to do something out of the box with these contests.

I got two awards in this challenge:

I'm especially pleased with the Mod's Choice award. Knowing that you've created something which has taken the specific notice of the contest's moderator, our lovely rightxhere in this case, or the previous winner in the case of contests with Artist's Choice awards, is very fulfilling. It's also my favourite icon of the set. =]

I couldn't really get into challenge #27. The theme was Christmas, but I just wasn't getting into the festive mood. I decided early on not to put santa hats on anyone, but instead to go with a light and texture overlay theme that would feel a little chintzy. I also decided I had to make myself an animated icon for the contest, as practice if nothing else. Again I chose to go with a single episode to draw stills from, in fact they were mostly from a single scene. The only exception was a season ten cast photo of Amanda and Ben which I set to a snowy window backdrop.

What can I say? Cam and his mug just made me think egg nog. Sam's egg nog. Also, that mistletoe in the fourth icon is the Original Mistletoe as seen in the Christmas episode of Warehouse 13. I don't mess around! Still I'm not that pleased with them, as I said, I couldn't quite get into the festive mood. =P Still I did share the award for best animation.

LJ restrictions on usericons make it *so* hard to make a well animated icon. The text suffered as a result, unfortunately. As you can tell I basically used this challenge as an excuse to cap that scene from 'Talion'. Sam and Cam's little back and forth looks are so adorable.
