I wanted to see countries first fighting over the ideas and who should make them happen, then realizing they needed to cooperate. I wanted the UN and the EU involved, I wanted scared and underwhelmed Presidents and Prime Ministers. The message from the Queen! I'm sad it was omitted. I still love that scene in Doctor Who when Earth waits for the first contact with "the Toclafane" and it's obvious to everyone that the American president will be representing humankind... only to be killed ten seconds later :D

Surely when you're American it feels different. I think the myth of "the greatest country" is still strong there and blind capitalism is not as widely criticized as it is in Europe. Many viewers might have really not expected the plot going the way it went. You probably didn't hear about a Swedish band "Sabaton", but in one song, they praise Polish soldiers that fought in a particular battle despite being extremely outnumbered. Under that song, someone wrote a comment in English: "it's amazing, you were so outnumbered and you still won!". So if that lack of happy end could be surprising for someone, so can everything.

"Contagion" sounds great, and it has some famous names - I'll check it out :)
