Dear friends,
As much as I am happy right now, sitting on the bed in my childhood bedroom, with windows wide open and the air heavy with the dispelling heat of the day, and listening to my sisters talking and causing a ruckus like Kitty and Lydia Bennet, I am weighed down by some heavy news. Kosie, our dear old beagle, came home from the clinic this afternoon with the diagnosis that her spleen is harboring a large and very possibly cancerous growth. Thankfully the tumor is contained and not running rampant through her body, but it has swollen her spleen to the size of a small grapefruit, causing her stomach and other nearby organs to be shoved painfully to the sides.
Kosie is scheduled for surgery on Monday morning at 9:00. The surgery is risky: the operation involves removing her spleen entirely, and it is not uncommon for dogs to not make it through the operation, or during recovery (due to hemorrhaging). But it is the only action we can take for her. If left alone the spleen will rupture. And we don't want to put her down if there is still a viable alternative. But even then, the surgery is dependent on the results from Kosie's blood draw. The veterinarian will not operate unless the tests verify that Kosie's system is strong and healthy enough for her to recover.
If you have a moment this weekend, would you please lift up a prayer for Kosie and our family? Pray that the surgery will go well and that Kosie will recover swiftly and completely and without complications. Pray that we won't be anxious. Pray that we will cherish these next couple of days. I don't want to consider the reality of it, but these may be the last we'll have with her.
With thanks and hugs,
Jennifer
