I finished the fifth season last week. *cheers* It was satisfying, closing the loop and getting answers to most of the questions that were raised during the series. Well, half-answers in any case. I still have a lot of questions in regards to the cracks. But I have a feeling that the confusion is intentional. Oh bother.
Anyway, onto "The Curse of the Black Spot."
"The Curse of the Black Spot" (6x03)
"The Curse of the Black Spot" was a nice breather, a perfect break from the craziness of the previous two episodes; like a swimmer's coming up for air before plunging back into the foamy waters. It had its scary moments, but they weren't too hard to handle. (Not like the Silence, my goodness.) Bewitched!Rory was hilarious, and the Doctor had some really amusing lines. A few of my personal favorites were:
"A green, singing shark in an evening gown."
- The Doctor
"There are worse ways than getting your face gnawed off by a dodgy mermaid."
- The Doctor
"I know, I know, bad luck to break [the mirror] and all, but look at it this way - there's a stroppy homicidal mermaid trying to kill us."
- The Doctor
The Siren was a nice twist. I didn't see it coming that she was actually an emergency response program. All along, I thought she was an alien with some unusual purpose for stalking the men aboard the ship. The twist reminded me of the "The Girl in the Fireplace" (2x04), with the clockwork androids stalking Madame de Pompadour because they were carrying out their directive to repair the ship. The Siren was similar, in that she "stalked" the sick and injured aboard to carry out her directive to heal.
Poor Rory. He's always getting killed, or getting very nearly killed. During the CPR scene, I was nervous that he would pull a Season 5 - where he would die, and reappear later on in the season as something else. (Maybe a cowboy? How about a rockstar?) I'm glad he didn't. It would have been ... well, lame, if he did. And is it just me, or is Rory needing a good fight scene? I get it that Amy's the more aggressive personality in their relationship, and that their relationship is slightly unconventional for that, but still, it's tiring to me to see him always sitting on the sideline, while Amy does all the rescuing and the fighting. I mean, come on. Please tell me he wasn't a Roman centurion for 2,000 years for nothing.
I'm really curious about the woman in the sliding window. (Like the eye patch and the red lipstick, by the way.) Is she a hallucination? Maybe an alien. Someone from a parallel world? Is she at all connected to Amy's ambiguous pregnancy state?
Speaking of which - any thoughts on that? It's strange that the TARDIS' scan can't seem to confirm one way or the other. Why is that? I mean, you're either pregnant or you're not. There can't possibly be an in-between.
I like the parallel that was drawn between the Doctor and Captain Avery. They're very different people, but they're both lonely wanderers, without a home to return to or a fixed destination to look forward to. Makes the Doctor seem more relatable. We've all experienced sadness, or loneliness, or tragedy at some point in our lives. Maybe not to the extent that the Doctor has, but it's there in our personal history.
"I've traveled far like you. Space can be very lonely. The greatest adventure is having someone to share it with you."
- The Doctor
