I have this idea...

(I exist! I've sort of fallen into ravelry in a big way, as seems to happen when people discover it. They have forums!!)

I have this idea for something we're going to call a scarf, because it's a giant long piece of flat knitting, part Dr. Who Scarf, part this neat scarf-thing here, part Hitchhiker's Guide towel.

It would be long, probably about 20 feet or so (Dr. Who scarves range, but they all touch the ground on both sides and then make a neck-to-almost-ground-length loop in the middle), and about 12" wide, maybe as wide as 18"

It would have a border an inch or two wide, with buttonholes up one side and buttons up the other, as in Versatility.

I'd run a cable up both edge next to the border, probably a D4-random cable like here or here, but maybe something otherwise mathematically cool, still working on that part this, from here (scroll down) is cool, too). The center 6 to 8 inches, however, would be straight stockinette (it's supposed to be all-purpose, after all, which requires _some_ flat surface) or a very simple textured stitch.

So the end piece would be ungodly long, just enough complexity to keep interest but not so much as to make it a slogfest of knitting. (Yes, I still have to finish db's scarf first.). It would serve as a shawl-scarf, possibly a very long vest-like-thing, a blanket (with some clever planning of buttons & also-clever folding, although it would be a slightly narrow blanket (6' long x 3 times the width of the scarf, minus overlap), it would be still good in an emergency.

Problems:
  1. Must finish db's monstrosity first!
  2. Picking yarn. db's will take over 6 skeins of Blue Sky Dyed cotton, at 150 yds/skein - over 900 yards of yarn. And his scarf is going to be about 13' by 8-to-18" wide.
I need a yarn that will be:
    • Not too expensive. Blue sky costs $9/skein
    • non-wool (ick) and non-100% acrylic (ick. Also, non-absorbent ;-)
    • not too heavy. Otherwise, I might just knit the thing in dishcloth cotton, but damn! the weight of that!
    • available in colours I find appealling
    • bulky enough to not kill me with the knitting - worsted or Aran weight
  3. picking a cable pattern, and a stitch pattern for the middle
Oy.

Oh, and I'm contemplating doing stripes in two close colours in a Fibonacci sequence. ;-) (check out this one)
