You know it's coming,

but still....you're never really prepared.

I just got back from West Palm Beach. Jonathan's on a plane to West Virginia to say goodbye to his Dad.

The hope is that he'll still be alive when he gets there.

Over the past 2 weeks, his condition got worse and worse, and then, suddenly, he seemed to rally and we all exhaled.

The call came yesterday, on my cell phone, which I didn't get until we were sitting in the bank lobby at 11:30 this morning. Jon said "You have mail on your phone. Can I check it?" and I said, "Sure." I had totally forgotten that his Aunt Cathy had agreed to call me first if anything changed, so I could tell Jonathan myself. God! What a fuck up I can be sometimes!

"If any family wants to see him, tell them to come now".

So, I watch his face simply implode on itself...crumble....he grabs my arm....and I KNOW.

It took some finagling, but we got a ticket and his plane left at 7:30. We had just enough time to wash some clothes, clean up and pack and then drive the hour and a half to the airport.

At least there was some levity as he got singled out and searched really thoroughly...I think his belt buckle was at issue.

And he waved, and I waved (across 1/2 a room of security checkpoint) and he yelled "I love you" and I yelled back "I love you" and he turned and was gone.

It's never been much of a relationship, but it's his Father, after all, and he needs to be there.

I should be with him, but there is not enough money for 2 tickets, nor can I really take the time off work. I've always been there, with him, at times like these, and this time I can't. It shits that he has to go through this by himself. His brother Barry and Uncle Richard and Grandma Doris are all there (as well as his 1/2 sister Jennifer), but still....

Jon'll be without a computer for a while, so e-mail him if you get the chance. It would be nice for him to have some messages when he gets back

Dear God! Keep him safe and sane. Let Gene go peacefully. Let his kids all get a chance to say goodbye. It's probably the last time the 3 of them will be together for a long time.

Peace. Out.
