Day 4 - Of music boxes and flying yen

So it is day 4.

One of the landmarks that leads to the hotel.

Good old Lawson. The travellers realised that the Lawson next to their Ueno Hotel is pitifully small when they explored the THREE lawson they have on their route from the station to their hotel.

The lonely travellers woke up early wanting to go to Hakodate for a 2nd day but for some reason all trains to Hakodate was cancelled. There was some annoucements going on about why it was cancelled but the travellers couldn't hear and couldn't understand the annoucement and so now it is still a mystery. As a last minute decision, the travellers decided that Hakodate isn't that important after all. So off to Otaru they go.

the weather wasn't fantastic that day. It rained the night before and it was drizzling in the morning. The train tracks ran next to water again this time.

The little space between train cars that this lonely traveller mentioned that was a good place to snap shots since the windows over that side is usually always cleaner.

So the lonely travellers took the 30+ mins ride to Otaru. But first they got off at Minami-Otaru just one stop away from Otaru station cause that's where the music box places are. They got out of the station and they wandered around as usual since the lonely travellers couldn't get their bearings right.

They came to this steep slope that this lonely traveller swore was at least 35 degrees or so. The travellers decided to go down it. Walking down this slope was slow going since they were afraid to roll down like Jack and Jill

This was taken as they walked down the slope.

They got lost for a while before they finally found the tourist trap!

Tourist Trap 1 of millions, this traveller thinks. Sells more Ghibil stuff plus some snoopy stuff.

This is the interior of the biggest tourist trap around. Sells tons and tons of different types of music boxes. Ranging from the cheaper to the expensive. Note there isn't any cheap stuff cause everything is 1000 yen upwards. There are some things that was 10,000 yen and upwards as well... Loads and loads of tour buses unload prey for them to devour and wipe clean of money.

But that said, they do sell the nicest things.

They have 3 levels and at the top you can see how the music boxes are actually made. This poor girl is like an exhibit in a zoo. She gets stared at tons of time a day this traveller thinks.

Some weird japanese english.

If this traveller isn't wrong this is the steam powered clock outside the Otaru Orgel Museum.

Wood craved cats as public decor.

This is the shop where they displayed the celebrities that had visited them. Later the lonely travellers discovered the same pictures displayed here was used at at least two other places. So the travellers have no idea which branch did the celebrities visited exactly. This lonely traveller got a t-shirt from this place.

This nice looking building was what lead the lonely travellers to come check out this small lane. The lonely travellers had intially thought this was the orgel museum but as it turns out it wasn't. It isn't even any tourist spot. It is just a shop that sells chocolate. A famous chocolate from Otaru.

Otaru Street scene

Spotted: A weird bike, not sure it is for rental or not.

Spotted 2: Right behind the bike, a pony carriage with a bored looking pony.

Spotted 3: Live and dead seafood.

Spotted 4: Monster from the deep.

Spotted 5: Marimo for sale. (Marimo are algae balls)

Spotted 6 (in a shop): Real looking sushi that are actually made of threads.

Spotted 7: Make your own glass!

Spotted 8: Dogs in a pram. (Note the travellers are just walking down a straight road from the orgel museum)

So the travellers were hungry and they went in search for food. They picked a place at random and stepped in. Lo and Behold, it is a sushi place! Everything raw and expensive!

The other lonely traveller's shocked expression.

It was decided that they should order the cheapest and scram ASAP. And so this lonely traveller ate raw stuff. Most memorable was the squid, impossible to bite, impossible to swallow and so out it came and onto the plate.

So the lonely travellers made their way back to the bioggest toursit trap so be parted with their money before moving onto Otaru proper. And up the slope they went. This lonely traveller tried to run to the top of the slope when nearing the end but it was impossible..... Try it to know what it feels like.

And when the travellers got out of the station they walked straight  down the main road and they found a road procession.

Spotted 9: Uncle carrying his stall on his shoulder. He was selling wind chimes.

An unused? train tracks.

The lonely travellers break away from the main road to check out the Otaru Canel.

The Lonely traveller down the lonely path.

The Otaru Canel (Long Kang)

More lonely traveller entertainment.

Then the lonely travellers are off to check out the Japanese Pasar Malam

HUGE Cotton candy. 500 yen a bag. That's about $6.50 - $7.00 each. Just one bag is enough to rot your teeth.

A Japanese Summer Festival Pasar Malam

The festival was held near the habour so the lonely travellers checked out the view.

Spotted 10: Dog wearing kimono.

Spotted 11: People catching gold fishes. (traditional booth at a japanese pasar malam)

Spotted 12: There was live singing at the festival. Didn';t know who she is but the lonely travellers got her cd.
Think her name is Yum-my
