New Stuff!

Figured I'd update with some of the shiner things going on *smug*

- First off, we finally got the new DVD-R up and running, after nearly three hours. Much cursing, swearing, and nail-biting as time grew short to this weeks' new eps. of Naruto. (It's really addicting, what can I say?). I've got it to record stuff, and I'm definitely grateful it's back, but I'll still be calling Phillips on Monday. First off, why did they send us a totally new, but different unit? Though it was a *super smug* moment when dad got it hooked up and I got it to work ("Do what I say! Rawr!"), it's still VERY different from our old one, with a zillion new options n' crap, and even the manual is written in straight techno-geek lingo. There a few things I'd like explained and ironed out, yes.

- In quite squeetastic news, Blood the Last Vampire is on monday at 11pm on sci-fi! YAY! *score!*
Last week was Perfect Blue, and let me tell you what, it was probably the worst anime I've ever seen. I paid attention and everything, but it makes NO SENSE at about the halfway point. So I did what I've taken to doing now when I despise some movie and/or show I wasted time watching - I make a review on IMdB! I skewered it here:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0156887/usercomments-117
I'm still fuming people actually compared it to Princess Mononoke - I thought my description in the above review pretty much summed it up:

"I'm personally offended that some people have dared to compare this to an absolutely fabulous anime that came out the same year, Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke". Not only are the two of COMPLETELY different genres, comparing Princess Mononoke to Perfect Blue is like eating a piece of chocolate VS. being stabbed in the eye. No, really."

Heh - much love to IMdB that they allow unvarnished truths like that to be posted up. /soapbox in defense of Studio Ghibli and all their utter fabulousness

- I finished my shopping today! Amazing, since usually I wait 'till, like, three days before. It had to depressingly light this year, but at least I found shiny things. I picked out my present this year - I said I wasn't going to do it, but HellMart had the OotP movie for $13 something, so I snagged it. I'm really excited  - I'll probably watch it tomorrow, and I can't wait to see the bit between Cho and Harry, and far more importantly, Arthur Weasley's attack. Yea, we had a gigantic coke and an even bigger popcorn at the movies, and eating lots = need smoke RIGHT NOW. But at least now I can watch it and gleefully yell at it without disturbing anyone. Except maybe Sappho, but she's usually alarmed at something or other.

- I met a some of my buddies from my first semester at college today at the market! *SQUEEEEE!* I almost walked right past Joe, though not without a definite *ting* going off in my brain, of "I know you from somewhere, but it was long ago and far away". Luckily, he had the same reaction, and we both reminded each other who we were, and things were shiny. Guess who else was there? MATT! *sigh* I still vividly remember the days of hanging out at the town shop (teen hangout, yay), and just how awesomely he could play Every Rose Has It's Thorn, with a pretty spiffy vocal accompaniment. I got the news low-down:

- Matt married his girlfriend from back then! I hope I said congratulations in my excitement - from what I remember of her, she's really nice. I only met her a couple times, but she definitely left me with the impression of being one of those friendly people that everyone gets along with. You know, not one of the awful snotty popular people, one of the ones that everyone likes because she's genuinely a nice person. Too bad Matt had to take off pretty quick - hopefully next time I go I'll be able to pass over my e-mail.

- Two of my other friends that were dating in college got married, and have a kid on the way! Now THAT totally came out of left field, seeing as they're almost as odd a couple as Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen (You know, MTV's show "Strange Love"? I've never watched it, and dammit, I really hate that I know this..). Either way, they were definitely Shiny People.

- I couldn't resist asking about Dawn and hoping she had some incurable social disease. *cracks neck* Let me explain why I don't like Dawn. She was a stripper (and apparently still is) - now, that's definitely not an automatic strike on my list, seeing as I still have fond memories of a couple former friends-of-that-pursuasion-though-it's-definitely-not-for-me. We'd all be hanging out at school, and she'd march right in and start offering to do bachelor parties and to top it off, had a real snot attitude about it, too. She actually accused me of being jealous because she was "getting all the attention". Now, I won't deny that I can be jealous sometimes, but rly. If memory serves, I informed her she was acting like a skank, but meh. /grudge

- Now that brings me to Joe. Turns out he's been up to pretty much the same I've been up to - not too damn much. He plays WoW and zooms around Myspace occasionally, but I gave him my blog addy and told him to hurry up and come over, dammit. Myspace is for emo kids, anyway. Turns out he's into anime, too, so we got to delightfully chew over that fun topic. Definitely reminded me I've got to get Vampire Hunter D on my 'To Watch More/Get Subbed' list, wish AS hadn't let their rights lapse, it was one of their better ones. I got to meet his dad, too, which was pretty cool, and we also subverted this kid selling toy helicopters and got the shipping address off a box by his booth - I felt kinda bad, but he *was* selling 'em for a triple mark-up. Never mind that.
*muses* He was also the second person to tell me since I came back hat I haven't really changed, and that it was a cool, awesome thing. Hmmm, I must think on this phenomenon moar.

But all right, that's all I've got for the moment, other than the fact that have I told you guys yet that I really *heart* Light Yagami, especially after tonight's Death Note ep.? Well, there is never enough love for Light, IMHO, especially because although L. is wierd and that is almost always okay, L. still strikes me as Creepy!Wierd. Anyway, admire the shiny new icon, and I'm off to battle the Plot Raptors before sleeps. :D

anime, rl
