On Second Opinions

Sarah's diagnosis of Hoshimoto's Disease has been called into question by her gastroenterologist, who she saw yesterday. That doctor says that her immune system is NOT attacking her thyroid, but her liver directly. He suspects something more sinister than Hoshimoto's - something like primary bulliary cirrhosis (PBC).Well, not cirrhosis, at this point, since her liver still seems to be functioning, but the condition that can lead to PBC.

From what I read on the internet, which knows everything, 80 percent of PBC cases can be treated, but some cannot be. In those cases, a liver transplant is called for. Sarah knows this, too, and is very upset that this is a possibility. She hates doctors and hospitals, being herself a nurse, and is none too keen on the prospect of a major surgery.Hopefully, this can be avoided.

Sarah is going for more tests next week to determine if PBC is the likely cause of what ails her, and to help determine how far it has advanced. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that whatever is bothering her is easily treatable, and that she can regain some quality of life in the coming weeks and months.
