As a kind of penance and merit-gathering exercise, I've decided to be vegetarian for a month till
Vesak Day. This poses a little bit of a problem here at work since there are no vegetarian stalls in the canteen nearby, although both the Western and Indian food stalls have certain vegetarian dishes.
Occasionally it has been a challenge when I want to have something in a hurry or on the run, as almost everything in the food courts have meat or fish in them. I try to avoid eggs as well where possible, but sometimes I encounter some mayonnaise or a cake base in my dessert, I don't make a fuss. Waste not, want not.
I have great enthusiasm for food (heheh, understatement of the year, anyone?), so thinking about chicken and curries and sausages and stuff do make me rather wistful at times; however, by and large, it's not been a problem. I fulfill my hunger for protein and savoury food with cheese and various tofu foodstuffs. I've gone vegetarian for as long as three months before, so this isn't new. What will be challenging is that I plan to do some fasting on the last week, leading up to Vesak Day. Not a real fast, more of a liquid diet to give my stomach a bit of a rest and do a bit of detoxing.
Wish me luck!
