Summer Wrap Up

Aug 21, 2007 06:22

Summer is almost over, again.

Every year, it amazes me how often I seem to write those words.

Every year, too, it always strikes me how, during the course of the summer, I always feel as though I've accomplished nothing. Or how few of the "Summer Promises" I've kept. Or that I have essentially squandered so much free time. But then, invariably, in reflecting upon the summer, I realize all that I actually HAVE accomplished.

This year, I ran my first 5K--a goal I've had for years-- and I completed it in my fastest time, ever. And on the very same day, I saw one of my best friends marry someone that I helped introduce her to.

I completed my second full year as a teacher--and I actually feel that I made a lasting impact on the lives of dozens of kids, who I truly believe will always remember their sixth-grade teacher, Miss Carey. And, that feels pretty damn amazing.

I met Kyle, the best thing to happen to me in years. In just a few short months, I have laughed more, loved more, and tried more things than I have in any other relationship I've ever been in. He makes me happy every single day, and I already can't imagine my life without him.

I spent a month living on Tom & Joe's couch. At times, it was almost intolerable. But, mostly, it was a great time. Just a series of unbelievable stories and adventures. And, most importantly, I gained from it a month's worth of memories and time spent with my favorite human being in the entire world.

I moved into a gorgeous new apartment, and I set it up exactly the way I wanted it. I created a home that I finally feel totally invested in and proud of.

I taught English to 20 eighteen year old boys from Italy in the community room of the Cranston Police Department, and in doing so, acquired more culture over the course of 10 days than I have in my entire 25 years of existence.

So, I guess I have nothing to worry about. It was a summer well-spent.
