comic book rec: mystic

I discovered a new comic book series that I'm excited about! I stumbled across it through my usual habit of flipping through everything at the local comic shop that 1) has a woman on the cover who is 2) not drawn in a way that makes me cringe. (Which usually means I look at 2-3 comics per visit.)

Mystic #1 preview and sketches & more preview pages.

The art is gorgeous, a smooth colorful style like stills from an excellent animated movie. It's set in a science-fantasy world that takes cues from steampunk without going for the overused trappings (no gears for gears' sake.) The two main characters are immediately relatable with strong voices.

Giselle and Genevieve are indentured servants at the orphanage where they grew up, working as laundresses until they can pay off the debt for the cost of their upbringing. Hopeful Genevieve dreams of becoming an apprentice magician, and cynical street-smart Giselle helps her skive off to the library to study restricted magic books. By the end of the second issue, one is studying magic at the palace and discovering it's as dangerous in its own way as the streets ever were, while the other begins putting the forbidden lore to work as part a group of proletariat revolutionaries.

It's been a long time since a new comic series really grabbed me. The art, the characters, the writing and the potential of the story all have me really eager to see where Mystic will go next.
