sga recs: matter of death and life, remix fics
So many good stories recently!
A Matter of Death and Life (SGA, John/Rodney, PG-13, ~25K) by
rheanna. After "Enemy at the Gate", John has yet another near-death experience, but this one doesn't leave him unscathed; he starts having visions, and seizures... and regrets. There's so much to love about this story I don't even know where to start. Great plot, great John characterization, and a beautifully depicted friendship between John and Rodney before the romantic aspect ever comes into it. If you ship these guys at all, it's a must-read.
John Sheppard and the Pegasus Kid by riani1, John/Rodney, SFW, is light with a touch of bittersweet. Set during the Earth interval of The Return, this story has a bored and defiant Rodney indulging in a little grey hat hacking. John's sent to rein him in, but John has impulses of his own to keep in check.
A very original remix: Dear John (WIP remix), gen with pre-John/Rodney implications. The original, Stutter by
pocky_slash, is set just after Lost Boys/The Hive, while Rodney slowly recovers from his enzyme overdose; he can't express himself, so: He takes his pills, opens his laptop, and writes a letter to John, a transcription of his speech filled with italics and underlined phrases and capital letters, but he resists giving the letter to John. Dear John (WIP remix) is the actual letter Rodney wrote, and edited, and redacted, and added notes to... it's a little confusing at first, but as it becomes clearer what's going on, it's both funny and heartbreaking. "We're supposed to be in this together as a team but you spent way more time worrying about whether Ford was going to come back than whether we were going to survive... I can move mountains given sufficient time, energy and raw materials to work with and I would do it for you if you would let me and ask me and not stand there while neanderthals with the IQ of a doorknob shoot me up with what essentially amounts to highly refined Wraith spit."
Best. Mistake. Ever. (The Lover's Day Remix) sees John telling Torren the story of how he and Rodney got together. Based on the short sweet Lover's Day by
sabinetzin.
Ripples in a Pond (The More Things Change Remix) is gen teamfic with a lovely Teyla point of view: an early team swimming outing, and a later scene with Torren and the team's families joining them in the water. The original by texanfan is the early scene of team bonding from John's perspective, and nicely shows John's care and appreciation for his teammates.
Scar Tissue (the Heal Thyself Remix), from Nightmares by skieswideopen, is pre-Heightmeyer/Sheppard. After Kate is forced to shoot an attacker, she turns to colleagues and friends for support, and she's surprised to find how much John's company helps her cope.
Quake at the Sight (Divine Grace Remix) is a charming Xmas-themed story, with warm scenes of Teyla & John friendship and hints of pre-John/Rodney. The original, Quake at the Sight by
monanotlisa, is outright John/Rodney and features cookie-making, which made me hungry!
