meme from
warmboys.
If you had to delete all but five of your stories, which five would you keep and why? (Or ten if you're more prolific.) (I'm going to assume WIPs aren't counted and the same with abandoned fic)
1.
my troisbang (because of the concept and the not-so-bad-but-could-be-better execution)
2.
my crossover_bbang (because it was the longest thing i had written at that point and it isn't half bad)
3.
my first-ever (and possibly only ever) tae7en (because this pairing holds a special place in my heart!)
4.
my fic for jeny's birthday last year; hanberchul (because this is probably my best fic overall)
5.
my kpop_ficmix from last year for itachibana13; taemin-centric (because it's actually well written)
What disappointed you the most about your last story?
The last thing I posted was a
Jay/Heechul drabble for kpopvalentines. I'm pretty satisfied with it, but if I had to pick one thing, it's how I continually list out details/descriptions. Because I wrote it, I'm sick of the lists. I mean, in the first paragraph I list out all the people important to both Jay and Heechul and how they react when they're tired of trainee-life, and in the second I list out what "one of those nights" means with the repetition of "It means..."
Pick a passage you're especially proud of. Ideally it'd be one of the best passages you think you've ever written.
The sun’s retreating back to the horizon that much faster, and the air is getting cooler. The leaves are turning crunchy underfoot, and the flowers have retreated.
But at the beach, the sun is blazing high in the sky, the warmth bare but there, and the sand still soft and warm.
That’s where Hyukjae finds Donghae on their day off, the high tide having caused the sand to become smooth and even.
He’s holding a large stick, dragging it laboriously through the dirt behind him as he treads lightly. He’s doing it methodically and calmly, and Hyukjae watches him, the brother he never had, as he carves temporal lines into the sand.
“What’re you doing?”
Donghae looks up and waves before he jogs over to Hyukjae, toes burying through the sand and making friends with the shells.
“Can you see-Oh, you can’t see from here.” He frowns. “Okay, I’ll finish up and then we’ll go up to the cliffs. Did you know you can see the Great Wall of China from outer space? I bet if you wrote big enough, you could see it as well, and if, you know, aliens ever decided to just fly by, they’d see it. Or people in alternate universes going through a universal rip or something, I don’t know. But I’ll show you!”
A sudden gust of wind blows at them from the ocean, both of them suddenly tasting hair. Donghae spits his out while Hyukjae moves it with his fingers, pulling the strands from his tongue.
“Are you sure about this?”
Donghae looks down at his feet, toes wriggling at him.
“It’s been over a month since Sungmin’s been gone and we haven’t heard,” he says softly, and Hyukjae freezes. “If aliens can see it, then he must be able to as well, since he’s closer, right? I just miss him, Hyukjae; it just doesn’t feel right with him gone.”
Hyukjae knows what Donghae means. One third of their universe has gone, never to return, and it feels like the world is slowly tipping on its axis, the fabric of their world falling apart at the seams.
But it wouldn’t help to just mope in misery, so Hyukjae allows Donghae to drag him to the cliffs that overlook that small section of sand, and quite clearly, he can read; Lee Sungmin, we miss you.
from my
troisbang, part 2Now tear it apart.
I'mmmmmmmmm, going to assume you mean critique it. I admit it isn't fantastic but in the context of the fic, I really like it. There's a bit of indulgence there -- Donghae's aliens comment as a throwback to like, SJ stereotypes but it works. But I have to admit that some of the descriptions, like; "making friends with the shells" and "the high tide having caused the sand to become even and smooth." Not nice. "making friends with the shells?" I'M SO EMBARRASSED BY THIS LINE. I recall another similar line from another embarrassing fic "making friends with the dust bunnies." More description would also be nice! Not the elusive, heart-wrenching crap in the beginning, but more solid stuff about Donghae and Hyukjae, and maybe more about the cold/autumn to set the mood, since autumn is about loss and Donghae is obviously missing Sungmin. Omg I love concriting my own work, I can be as harsh as I want and not censor myself. It's too NAKED! The lines are too bare. The line about Donghae wriggling his toes -- wtf is that? (I remember imagining him doing that while I was writing, and it was cute, but!) What is the point? At least put some clothes on the lonely line, give it some friends and some purpose you goddamn stupid writer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But the dialogue can stay ^___^ I like it, still.
What's a favorite story by someone else? How would you describe the style, narrative technique, etc (whatever you want to say about it)?
So I was going to rec one of Diana's, one of Jeny's, one of unlearned's, one of thirdonebetween's, one of schm0use's, one of puppycadet's... Yeah, but everyone knows they're awesome! So a gem someone showed me a while ago:
a Donghae/Hankyung. A rarepair, NOT my OTP or involving ANY of my biases (:O). It's not amazing or mindblowing, but the simple descriptions and especially since it's told in Hankyung's voice, it's nice. It's peaceful. It's simple, it's not "pretentious" and it's not trying hard. AND IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU THINK! It's just a really nice, short story, character study, describing the characters, their thoughts... And it's short! So you know, us short-attention people... Great for us (Y)
If you could choose to emulate one fic writer, who would it be and why?
warmboys (HI DIANA) or
unlearned. Because they can juggle both humour and serious fic, they can write fic that makes you think and they have a way with words. Their plots are unique or they're so everyday and normal that you can relate and then it becomes something personal. They can drop references that you won't get until 5 reads later and they make you see characters in a different light. Also, credit to Diana, she can write basically any fandom, kpop-or-no, and make you believe them even if you are dead set against liking them, believing them or even if you've never seen them together.
How do you feel when or after reading something really good? Be honest.
Oooooh, hmm. With some fics I get goosebumps because they make me feel. With really good fics, as lame as it sounds, I get like this welling in my chest like: this is so good, this is so great, why! THIS IS LIKE LIFE CHANGING!
Most of the time, after, I get a huge urge to write something amazing and mindblowing and hope it takes the world by storm and I become a big name writer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But most of the time while I have that feeling, I know I won't be able to so I chuck up some lame drabble, post it then forget about it forever.
Pick an introduction to one of your stories and rewrite it as if it were not fanfiction but just plain fiction, ie. don't presume that the reader knows anything about the characters.
OKAY I AM SERIOUSLY TRYING TO FIND A RECENT FIC OR DRABBLE THAT I CAN DO THIS TO AND I REALLY, CAN'T. THE FICS ARE TOO THEM. And any AU ones I'd leave them as they are. I hate excessive explaining, especially in the beginning. NO NEED TO BOMBARD THE POOR READER.
What are five of your favorite words?
I can't think of any rn T______T This meme has tired me out. I hate you, Diana. And I don't really use my favourite words in fic (ie. EUTHANASIA HAHAHA and napiform.)
Bonus: refrain from using any of those words in the next story you write.
