The boy's teacher sent this home today. His task was to circle the items which began with "H", and to color them. He chose blue for the horse because he "likes horses and it was a pretty color."

Horses CAN be blue. They can. Why? Because he is six, and he has the most amazing imagination, and he has 24 crayons in his box. How DARE she try to stifle his creativity!?
The school held an open house so the parents and the teachers could meet. I saw this shortly before going in to say hello. When I asked what problem she had with the blue horse she informed me that horses are brown or black, and that she preferred that the students use realistic colors. This way she could discuss natural camoflage and other things. I responded that this same horse could spark a discussion of the "Wizard of Oz" with the line "A horse of a different color". She smiled at me and said "Oh, you must be very arty and literary." I do not believe she meant it as a compliment.
A storm is brewing. I'm not happy about it, ad I'll work very hard to control myself, but I see the clouds on the horizon.
