Too late to say sorry - Part 6

Sian reached the end of the corridor when she accidentally bumped in to a nurse pushing a trolley. “I’m sorry” Sian said helping her retrieve fallen items, “It’s okay love” the nurse said, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry” Sian began to cry. The nurse glanced to the direction where the young lady had run from, Intensive Care Unit. “It’s okay love, come on lets go in here”. The nurse said gently leading Sian in to a quiet room.

Sian rocked back and forth as the nurse told her senior that she was taking her break early, she entered the room and sat next to Sian. “So someone you know is in hospital eh?” she asked kindly offering Sian a tissue, she took it and crumpled it between her fingers. “Yeah my girlfriend”. Sian waited for the nurses’ negative reaction, after all that was the only reaction that they were used to, instead she was shocked as the nurse kept talking. “So what’s her name?” she asked. Sian looked up at her and smiled, she couldn’t be more than early twenty’s with red wavy hair and warm eyes. “Sophie, her name is Sophie”.

The nurse smiled “How long have you been together?” she asked checking her watch, “A year in April, gosh a whole year” Sian couldn’t believe that they had made it that long without breaking up. The nurse smiled “My wife and I have been together for seven years, it’s hard ya know at the beginning, people’s comments about it being a phase, but only you know what is right for you, I can see that you love Sophie, I’m sure she’ll be okay.

Are her family here?”. Sian nodded, she looked at the woman’s name tag “Ella”, there was a pause then Sian spoke again “Her family thought it was a phase until her mother caught us” Sian blushed as the nurse giggled. “Oh I know that feeling love, my grandmother saw me and Cara, that’s my wife when we were first dating, let’s just say that she sold the kitchen table at the next car boot sale and we never spoke of it again”. Sian laughed.

After few moments he nurse checked her watch again, “Sorry love, what’s your name?” she asked realising she should have asked her earlier “Sian”. The nurse smiled “My break is over Sian, do you want me to see if I can find out any more about Sophie?” Sian nodded, the nurse was leaving as Sian spoke “Webster, Sophie Webster, she’s sixteen”. The nurse nodded and left Sian to contemplate her next actions.

The room was quiet, too quiet she knew that despite their differences Sally and Kevin loved their daughter, Sian needed to be with them even if they didn’t want her there. They were her last connection to Sophie, so wiping her falling tears she shoved the tissue in her pocket and made her way back up the corridor.

Sian peeped through the closed door, she saw Rosie waving her arms about and voices raised. “I can’t believe you said that to Sian, don’t ya know how much she loves Sophie, she’s been there for her when we haven’t when you haven’t” she spat looking at her father who was now feeling ashamed of his reaction. “Rosie calm down, I’ll apologise when I see her okay”. Rosie stopped moving around, she was tired and hungry “You better, Sophie will never forgive you if you push Sian away”.

Rosie rummaged through her purse and was about to leave to go to the snack machine when she heard her mother speaking “Ya know despite all this, Jack, Molly, everything Sian was always there for her, for Sophie, for all of us she’s one of the family now, our connection to Sophie, I wish things were different that I hadn’t reacted the way I did, that they hadn’t felt that they needed to runaway. Sian was there telling me Sophie was skipping class, drinking, but I ignored her, I couldn’t bear to understand how she could know my daughter better than I could, but she does, she’s Sophie’s girlfriend, and I love her and I want her here, Rosie please go and find her” Sally cried.

Rosie opened the door and saw Sian stood there meek and mild, tearful and broken “Mum, it looks like she found us”, Rosie hugged Sian before leaving in search of food. Sally looked at Sian, this small, seventeen year old yet wise beyond her years, they looked at each other for a split second before Sally pulled her in to a hug, where they both were able to breakdown and cry for what was, what is and what may be.
