So procrastination lead me to searching for an analysis on Pink Floyd's The Division Bell (my favorite album by them). Yeah, I have a point, bear with me.
Apparently there was this quest set up for Pink fans by someone called Publius. They posted all these enigmatic clues that were suppose to point to this ultimate prize that was hidden at an undisclosed location (pretty interesting and complex, check them out next time you're bored). Fans were suppose to use a book (I forget the title), cover art from all the albums, lyrics from this album, and they were told to "listen. read. communicate.".
Most of the clues and comments point to places, history, literature, art, science, etc...ya know, all the subjects taught in school. People were encouraged to work together...if I had to guess, however, I think what Publius and the rest of the group were getting at was good communication. People all over the world who wanted the "prize" were communicating, expanding their intellectual horizons, listening to each other instead of interjecting or arguing or hurting each other.
I could be wrong, but after looking at most of the material I think these hippies were using the idea of a material prize to unite humanity starting with their fans. I guess if you want world peace and people to start getting along that's one hell of a good way to start...kudos to them, especially for making a bit of headway in the unification of humanity department.
