I locked the door of the car, balancing all of the bags I held. Luckily the house door was unlocked, allowing me to slip inside easily. I carried the bags up the stairs, dropping them in mine and Alex’s room.

“Hey, babe,” I said, seeing Alex look up from where he was laying on the bed. Josie was sleeping on his chest as he read his book.

“Hey,” he said, looking at all the stuff I had set down. “What’s all that?”

“Christmas presents,” I answered, “and some wrapping paper. You wanna help me wrap some of them while Josie’s still sleeping?”

“Later. I need to run to the store. Josie’s almost out of diapers,” he said, putting a bookmark in the book and setting it down.

“You should have called me. I could have picked some up while I was out,” I answered, pulling out the box for the walker I had bought Josie.

“I figured you knew,” Alex answered, moving Josie off his chest and carefully laying her on the bed.

“I just bought a package the other day. I figured we’d be good for a bit.”

“It’s fine. I’ll go get some. I need, like, $20 though,” he said.

“I’ll ask my mom if we can borrow it. Hold on,” I told him and he made a face, finding a shirt to throw on.

“Why do we need to ask your mom? You have money,” he said.

“I did. I just spent a whole bunch buying some of her presents,” I told him and he raised an eyebrow.

“You spent your whole paycheck on a present for a holiday that’s two weeks away rather than buy something your daughter needs now?” he asked, and I caught the sarcasm dripping in his voice.

“It was not my whole paycheck. It was money I’ve been saving up for the past couple of months because I knew I wanted to buy one of these for Josie, and a few other things. Plus I get paid in two days. I’m sure we have enough diapers to last that long if asking my parents for money is really that big of a deal to you,” I told him.

“I’ll just pay for them,” he said, shaking his head and grabbing his wallet and keys.

“Knock it off, Alex. There’s no reason to act like a dick right now,” I told him, watching him roll his eyes. “Jesus! I’ll go ask my mom!”

“I don’t want your mom’s money! We should have our money, Jack! I thought that’s why you wanted this job so damn bad,” he told me.

“I get paid on Friday, Alex! I’m sorry I get paid minimum wage! What do you want me to do? You want me to go downtown and get welfare? They’ll probably come after you for child support! We aren’t married!”

“Wouldn’t that be a sight to see,” he bit sarcastically again and I shook my head.

“Whatever. I’m sorry I hurt your precious pride by almost asking my mom for money,” I said.

He rolled his eyes, pulling on a jacket. I moved over to Josie, checking she was still sleeping. Alex brushed past me, walking out the bedroom door.

“Fucking asshole,” I muttered under my breath, moving Josie over to her bassinet. I caressed my baby’s face, kissing her forehead gently. I turned the baby monitor on, setting it on the dresser before leaving the room.

“What store are you going to?” I asked Alex as he shoved his feet into his shoes. He didn’t answer me, only walked out the door. “Fuck you!”

“Are you okay, Jack?” I heard my mom ask and I sighed.

“I’m fine. My boyfriend took a big spoonful of douchebag this morning, though,” I said with a glare out the window as his car pulled away.

“That sounds disgusting, honey. Please don’t say that again,” she said and I nodded.

“I’m sorry,” I mumbled, gritting my teeth.

“Relax, sweetheart. Come into the kitchen, I have some tea,” she said, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the kitchen. “Now what’s going on? Are you and Alex fighting?”

“He’s being a complete asshole! Over nothing!” I told her and she nodded.

“What happened?”

“He freaked out on me because I didn’t know that Josie needed more diapers. I just bought a whole new package on Saturday!” I told her. “And he’s pissed that I brought home presents, one of which is his fucking birthday present, which I bought with my money.”

“Why would he be mad you bought presents?” she questioned, setting my tea down in front of me.

“Because I told him I would ask you for some money to get diapers, which, according to him, means we don’t have enough money to support her since I just throw all my money away.”

“I would have given you money,” she said, knitting her brows together. “That isn’t a big deal at all.”

“It would hurt his pride,” I said, rolling my eyes. “He’s insecure about not being enough of a man and being unable to care for me and Josie. It’s his piece of shit dad’s fault.”

“That’s too bad,” she said, shaking her head. “He shouldn’t feel that way.”

“I’ve tried telling him that so many times. It’s ridiculous,” I told her.

“It’ll be okay, honey,” she said, patting my hand.

“I know. It’s just so frustrating. It’s the same argument over and over again,” I told her, sighing.

“I know, but you’ll work it out. Every relationship has something,” she told me.

“Josie’s awake,” I mumbled, hearing a noise on the baby monitor. I finished off my tea before standing up and going towards the stairs.

I walked into my bedroom, looking down at Josie.

“Hi, boo,” I said, smiling softly as I picked her up. She cooed at me, making a sour face and I chuckled. “What’s wrong, mama?”

She grunted and I smiled, resting her against my chest and kissing her forehead. “Let’s change your diaper, huh?

I went into her nursery, settling her down on the changing table. I bent over to get a diaper, opening the drawer and seeing the unopened package of diapers I had purchased a few days before. I rolled my eyes, grabbing a diaper and standing up. I set the diaper down by the baby’s feet, pulling my phone out of my pocket and dialing Alex’s number. It rang until it hit voice mail and I scrunched up my nose.

“Hey, asshole. I found the brand new diapers I told you we had. Now get the fuck over yourself and come home.”

I put my phone back in my pocket, unbuttoning Josie’s onesie.

“Your dad is an idiot,” I mumbled to Josie, and she let out a grunt. “I’m sorry, but he acting like one. You can’t deny that.”

I wiped her clean, putting a new diaper on before redressing her.

“I should take his birthday present back since he’s being such a butthead,” I said, picking her up,” but I won’t because we love him. And I want his first birthday he spends with his baby girl to be a special one.”

Josie cooed and I smiled, walking back into my room.

“I’m gonna wrap Daddy’s presents before he gets home. You wanna help, sweetface?”

She cooed again as I set her down next to me on a blanket. I cut out a square of wrapping paper, settling it in Josie’s hands. She became engrossed in the pattern, examining it intently. I smiled, chuckling and moving to wrap Alex’s two presents.

“Are you just gonna stay mad at me the rest of the night?” I asked Alex, adjusting the bottle I was holding to Josie’s mouth.

Alex glanced at me from behind his book.

“I’m not mad at you,” he muttered and I raised an eyebrow.

“Really? ‘Cause you haven’t had a nice word to say to me since I got home from work,” I said.

“I’m sorry,” he answered.

“Okay,” I said, looking back down at Josie. Her eyes were halfway shut as she drank, and I used the spit rag to wipe away the milk that was dribbling from the corner of her mouth.

Suddenly I felt the couch shift, arms wrap around my waist, and a head laid on my shoulder.

“I am sorry,” Alex mumbled, kissing my ear.

“I know,” I said, turning my head and catching his lips. “I wanna set up the Christmas tree tomorrow.”

“Me too,” Alex smiled, nuzzling my shoulder and stroking Josie’s blonde hair.
