“Alex,” I mumbled, opening my eyes. I looked around, hearing a beeping noise. I searched around the white room, eyes finally focusing and settling on May and my mom sitting at the side of my bed.

“Jack!” I heard May exclaim happily, and then my mom sigh in relief.

“Where’s Alex? W-what am I doing here?” I asked, sitting up.

“There was an accident,” Mom explained.

“What kind of accident?” I asked, continuing to look around the room for my boyfriend.

“A car accident,” May answered and my head snapped over to her quickly.

“Where’s Alex?!” I repeated. “Is he okay?!”

“He’s down the hall. The air bag hit him pretty hard when it was released. It knocked him unconscious,” Mom explained. “He hasn’t woken up yet.”

“Why isn’t anyone with him? What if he wakes up? I don’t want him to be all alone.”

“Rian and Zack are with him. The doctors are monitoring him closely. They’re, um, afraid of any brain damage,” Mom said.

“C-can I go see him?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. You’ll have to get the okay from the doctor first.”

The door opened, and a nurse walked in, smiling.

“Hello, Jack,” she greeted.

“H-hi,” I said, and she picked up the clipboard from the end of the bed. She checked a few things off, writing something down.

“We’re gonna take you in for an ultrasound, okay?” the nurse said, walking out with a wheelchair. She helped me into it, and I placed my hands over my bump. I rubbed my stomach, but Josie didn’t kick as she normally would. I didn’t feel anything at all, and I felt my chest start to tighten.

“She’s not kicking,” I told May, and she squeezed my hand.

“She’s gonne be fine, Jack,” she told me.

I laid back on the table in the ultrasound room. I moved the gown off of my stomach, allowing the doctor to use the wand and move it around my stomach. Josie showed up on the screen, sucking her thumb and making me smile.

“Okay, everything looks good. Let’s listen to the heartbeat,” the doctor said, turning the lights back on. She hooked me up, and I waited impatiently to hear the heartbeat. After a few minutes that seemed like hours, the room ws filled with the loud thump of a heartbeat. “Very nice. Strong, steady beat.”

“I told you she would be fine,” May whispered, and I grinned.

“Okay. Your baby is perfectly healthy. Now let’s run some tests on you.”

“She still hasn’t kicked, “ I told May as Mom left the room to go get a coffee.

“The doctor said she was okay, Jack. Don’t worry about it.”

“I know, but she’s always so active. Why isn’t she moving around?” I asked, continuing to rub my stomach.

“I don’t know. Maybe she’s sleeping,” she told me, and I frowned. “I’ll be right back. I wanna go check on Alex.”

She left the room and I sighed.

“Why aren’t you moving, baby girl?” I asked. “You’re making me worry.”

I looked around the room, not wanting to be here at all. The doctor wanted to keep me here to monitor me for just a bit longer, even though all of my tests were normal.

“You want your daddy, huh?” I said, feeling my eyes start to water. “So do I, Josie.”

I was so worried about Alex. I hadn’t gotten to see him yet, and my guess was that he still hadn’t woken up.

“He’s gonna be okay, though, baby,” I said. He’s gonna wake up and be perfectly fine because he knows you need him. You’re his princess.”

She still didn’t kick and I frowned, tears falling down my cheeks.

The door opened and May walked back inside.

“Jack? What’s wrong?” she asked.

“I’m so scared,” I whimpered. “I-I need Alex, May.”

“I know, honey,” she said, hugging me.

“This is my fault. If I hadn’t been fighting with him he wouldn’t have crashed,” I told her.

“Jack, don’t stress anymore,” May said. “Alex is gonna be fine. Josie is fine. You’re okay.” She cupped my face in her hands. “Just relax, baby brother.”

I took a deep breath, closing my eyes.

“That’s good. Keep taking deep breaths,” May said

“I just want to be with him. Will the doctor let me stay in the room with him?”

“I don’t know,” she answered.

“Jack,” I heard a voice say, and I looked up at my mom, who was standing in the doorway. “Visiting hours are almost over. I’m going to go home because I have to work in the morning. May, do you want to stay here with your brother?”

“Yeah,” May said, gripping my hand.

“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow, sweetheart. Call me if anything happens with Alex,” Mom said, kissing my forehead.

“We will,” May said. “Love you.”

“I love you,” Mom said.

“Love you,” I answered.

May patted my leg after the door shut. “Get some sleep,” she told me.

“I don’t think I’ll get much sleep, honestly.”

I moved the eggs around my plate, wrinkling my nose at them.

“Take these away before they make me puke everywhere,” I told May.

“You have to eat something, Jack. You haven’t eaten since dinner last night,” May told him.

“I will, just find something that doesn’t make me nauseas,” I told her.

“Like what?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” I said.

“I’ll talk to your nurse,” May said, standing up. After a few minutes she returned with an orange and some cereal. “Better?”

“Yes,” I answered. “Can I go home?”

“After they examine you once more, yes,” she answered. “Now eat. Feed your baby.”

“She’s still mad at me,” I told her.

“Why is she mad at you?”

“I don’t know. She’s being stubborn and not kicking.”

“If she’s already doing shit like hat, you guys sure have your work cut out for you when she’s a teenager,” she told me, laughing.

“God, I know,” I told her.

“Has she really not kicked at all?” May asked, sitting on my bed and touching my stomach.

“She’s moved, but no, she hasn’t kicked much. She wants her daddy.”

“Poor baby,” May said, rubbing my belly.

The doctor came in the room after I was finished eating. She took me out, repeating the same tests from yesterday. They came back just as perfect as they had been the day before. The only thing different today was a slight ache in my torso, which the doctor said may be strain from the airbag.

“So can I go home?” I asked.

“Any time you want,” she said.

“Okay. Thank you,” I said.

“Here’s your clothes,” May told me, giving me a bag. I took it into the small bathroom with me, taking the clothes ou of the bag. I dressed quickly, glad to be out of the hospital gown. I left the room, smiling at May. “Ready?”

“Can I go see my boyfriend?” I asked.

“Of course,” she said, leading me out of the door. We went down the hallway, entering another room. I saw Alex hooked up to machines just as I had been. I walked over, sitting in the chair next to his bed. “Do you want me to give you some privacy?”

“Yeah, if you don’t mind,” I said, watching her walk out of the door. It shut behind her, and I looked at Alex. I reached out, gripping his hand in mine. It felt warm, which made me smile a little. “Baby, wake up.”

I rubbed my thumb over his hand, brushing his bangs out of his face.

“I need you. Josie needs you. She’s so upset that she hasn’t heard your voice,” I told him. “You can’t give up, Alex. You promised your daughter you’d always be here for her.” I paused, sighing. “Please wake up soon, Alex. We love you.”

I felt his hand twitch, and then it squeezed my own. I grinned, the gesture assuring me that my Alex would be okay.
