Summary: Hotch ends up in the hospital and Spencer has to take care of Jack. Hotch/Reid

“I can’t, Aaron,” Spencer says; his voice quivers as he looks at his wounded lover.

“Spencer, I understand your trepidation, but I need you to,” Aaron sighs.

“I know, Aaron, but I can’t.”

“Jessica can’t take him, and while I know Garcia or Dave would take him, I know he’d rather it was you.  I would rather have you looking after him.”

“But I’m not good with children, Aaron, you know that,” Spencer responds, but Aaron looks at him with irritation, “At least not for as long as you’re asking for, and Henry doesn’t count. I’ve known Henry his whole life, and he’s still a toddler. He hasn’t realized how horrible I am.”

Aaron knows this is partly his fault. He let the joke carry through the BAU far too long and now it is ingrained in his lover’s head that he cannot adequately interact with children. He also worries that with the shyness that Spencer and Jack both have that they won’t even talk for the next 16 or so hours.

Jack walks solemnly into the hospital room, holding Jessica’s hand. He looks at his father, sees the bandages wrapped around, and stutter-steps toward him. His unease is obvious; he doesn’t want to go to his father in fear of causing pain. He sees Spencer standing next to his father’s bed and he launches himself at the lithe frame. His arms wrap around his neck and he burrows into Spencer’s collar before letting out a pitiful sob. Spencer’s face goes from frightful to compassionate as he squeezes the boy tighter.

“Daddy, you can’t die,” Jack sobs, pulling away from Spencer and looking at his father.

“Jack, I don’t plan on it, buddy.”

“Can I sit with him?” Jack asks Spencer. He knows his father will let him crawl into the hospital bed even if it is ill-advised or causes him pain just to appease the little boy.

“Yes, just lie against his right side and don’t move too much.”

Jack nods imperceptibly and Spencer lays him down against Aaron’s right side. Jack burrows into the bed, holds his dad’s hand, and kisses it softly. Aaron pats Jack’s leg and kisses his forehead.

“Daddy, I’m going home with Spencer tonight, right?”

“Right, mister, and you’ll be super good, because Spencer isn’t used to taking care of you.”

“But Daddy, Spencer takes care of me all the time,” Jack replies confusedly.

Aaron wants to throw Spencer a smug look, but he doesn’t want to push his luck.

“I know, buddy; he’s just worried.”

“Don’t be worried, Spencer; you’re good at taking care of me.”

“Aaron, are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”

“It’s more comforting to know someone is taking care of Jack. And you two need to get home so Jack can go to bed and go to school tomorrow.”

Spencer lets out a soft sigh of resignation, gathers up his go-bag, and grabs Jack’s bag. He kisses Aaron softly on the forehead with a whispered endearment. Aaron smiles in response as Jack gingerly gets off the bed and slides his hand into Spencer’s palm.

“Bye, Daddy,” Jack says as he waves good-bye to Hotch.

“I love you, buddy.”

“Love you too.”

“Be good for Spencer.”

“Daddy, I’m always good for Spencer because I love Spencer.”

Hotch smiles at Jack and watches a grin spread across Spencer’s face. He might be in excruciating physical pain, but he had this was the exact kind of boost he needed to keep up his spirits and get better.
