YES! This is exactly how I feel about people who use one quote from the Bible to excuse their hatred, prejudice, and discrimination against homosexuals.
Those are all old testament quotations though. In the New Testament the authors note that Jesus came to do away with the old law, and that we would be under his new law. Homosexuality is pointed out, apart from those other things, in the new testament, as still an abomination in God's sight. I can agree with you that it is just as ugly for a person to display their hatred and discrimination towards anybody else. yet, that doesn't mean that i would surrender my beliefs by accepting homosexuality as an acceptable way of life.
I understand what you're saying, but I think the whole purpose of this was more to show that times change and what might have been unacceptable at one time is now no longer so objectionable. Things have changed since then, and how people are treated and accepted in society has changed as well.
Really, I only posted this because I thought it was funny, not because I thought it was completely, entirely legitimate. I choose to agree or disagree with homosexuality based more on my heart and my relationship with God rather than on the Bible or any of its quotes. I agree with some things in the Bible and disagree with other things in the Bible, and that's why I choose to make up my own mind about most things. I think the Bible is around more just to lead, or guide, rather than set the exact rules.
This is a touchy subject. Please don't think I'm talking about you specifically in the above paragraphs, I'm just musing in general. :)
those are good arguments, and i'm glad that you have a gumption that few others have, in finding out about yourself and what you think is right. it's hard to find power in your Christian words though, when you curse, and hate the haters.
Fact: Marriage is a sacrement Fact: The Gov't doesn't control any other sacrements Fact: Nor do Christians want them to
So the real question is, shouldn't you be mad as hell that the government is facilitating your religion according to THEIR beliefs? good job Ryan. +2 Points.
The ONLY thing a government should technically do with marriage is view it as the mutual contract between two people that it is in legal terms. Now, the government doesn't get to chose who I make my contracts with in any other instances, it just protects me from breaches of said contract. That in mind, the government is skewing more rights of the people on precedent alone here; it shouldn't be a concern of theirs.
to elaborate further, creating an alternate set of rules, particularly some which bar the rights of people who are genetically different than the majority of the populace sounds a little bit like a segregatory action to me. If I'm not mistaken, America's quite proud of itself for overcoming that from the '60s. Right.
I agree with what you said ryan...but if "The Gov't doesn't control any other sacrements," then why are there benefits to being married. Technically, getting married should only be a sacrement and therefor the government is involving itself in the sacrements not only by regulating them but by offering advantages to married couples. So, all in all, our government has and will always play some role in our religion as long as we allow the select few to run our lives completely. Its a dreaded cycle.
let me expand, the government either needs to stop interfering with religion or stop pretending that it doesnt. I prefer that it stops interfering. And, just like how Americans denied African Americans civil rights, people are gunna look back on things like proposal 2 and feel like crap about it. i just dont understand how some people can be so closed minded about things like this. Civil unions ARE A GOOD IDEA!!!! if people cant except gay marriages yet, fine whatever i think that times will change, but they should not deny them of health insurance benefits and such. Gay couples having benefits WILL NOT HURT ANYONE ELSE!!!! PEACE
i cordially agree with Ben's statement, about the old testament and stuff. a person shouldn't be using quotes from the bible, because the old testament is outdated and people are only supposed to follow rules in the new testament...also, it is sort of mocking God and his message.
But with that i don't agree with every message the bible has to say, i still believe that it is open to interpretation, particularly in essence to the way some people choose to live their lives.
This upsets me, not the journal itself, but the fact that people are using the bible to justify or un-justify our government and its leaders. We as a people expect our government and religion to stay separated, and in step we try to make them one.
BTW, not attacking anyone, just expressing my feelings. This comment may feel mean, but it isn't meant to be.
this is a complicated issue that the whole freakin country is struggling with no one should get upset with others oppinions. I definatly respect all the oppions and on this page, because no one is being meliscious or hurtful to either side of the issue.
To be honest, I don't think any mockery was intended -- and if it was, then that's still not the way I intended it when I posted it. I thought it was funny, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. I didn't mean for this entry to incite any sort of theoretical/religion-related controversy/debating/arguing/whatever. It was just a joke, and not one meanly meant.
