this was shamelessly stolen from jessamyn's lj, who stole from joey.
Where did you begin 2009?
Forgot where we were exactly, but it was a big Christmas tree/pallet bonfire at someone's house whom I didn't know. I was outside in the snow. More generally, I was here in new hampshire, enjoying my house & my life.
What was your status by Valentine's Day?
Same status, here in new hampshire. Actually, strike that, I believe I was in Alaska at the time, waiting for the rocket to launch.
Did you have to go to the hospital?
Yes, once, accompanied by Parry because I had a broken toe and it hurt quite a lot. Ran into Tom, my then roommate, who worked there as a nurse so I got the VIP treatment.
Did you have any encounters with the police?
Well, of course. But they were mostly benign. The most interesting time was when the legless guy who lives down the street went out in the rain at night to get the mail, his chair ran out of batteries, and then called for help. I had to run down there and call the cops on the way, and the one that showed up was a real jerk.
Where did you go on vacation?
Let's see, my work sent me to Alaska, Snowmass CO and San Francisco. But on my own, I went to NC twice, a short excursion to Boogie land, Maryland, New York for New Year's, New York City a couple times, Russia, Mongolia, China, Belarus, Prague ... and I think that might be it? I flew on 8 round trip flights in the past year.
Embarrassed yourself?
Probably... definitely at SantaCon. We got way too drunk and tried to run through the subway system & talk to bus officials while smashed. But 2008 was by far much more embarrassing for me, so I feel quite good about 2009.
Did you know anybody who got married?
Tons of people! What the hell? Anyway, the list: Taylor & Hyun-ju (physics), Hyomin & Andee (physics), Julia & boy (physics), Elizabeth & boy (NC), Leia & boy (NC). I have the feeling I forgot someone... Now, I can handle it, just as long as they don't all start having babies...
Did you know anybody who passed away?
My Dad's aunt, but I have no recollection of ever meeting her.
What concerts/shows did you go to?
Some highlights are: Avett Brothers in Boston, Andrew Bird in Vermont, Amanda Palmer in Boston and Owen at UNH (but those were late 2008 so maybe don't count!)
Describe your birthday:
I was in NC, I helped clean the house and bring down boxes of Christmas decoration to get ready for the holiday party. Later, I went to W-S to see Sarah & Zack, got awesome birthday presents from them, had dinner at the Mellow Mushroom and watched MST3K.
What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2009?
Spend days on a train traveling from the Far East to Russia. And see the Gobi desert. And drink camel milk tea.
What have been your favorite moments?
In chronological order: snowshoeing in northern NH, flying over the ANWR nature preserve to the north coast of Alaska, seeing the Northern Lights for the first time, Christmas tree burn at my house, lots of Boogie moments, Fourth of July in NY, "visiting Aunt Flo" at the lake house in NY, Mom coming to visit me in NH, seeing Edith for the first time and bringing her home, hanging out with the awesome Australians in Russia, visiting continents I hadn't visited yet, meeting a couple special people in Prague, the whole damn month of October, my Halloween party, time at home with my families for Thanksbirthmas & the Holiday Party.
Any new additions to your family?
Edith! The best little pitbull ever.
What was your best month ?
October, hands down. It's always the best month.
Who has been your best drinking buddy?
Dana & Tavi! Always up for a trip to pub. Sarah's definitely in the running though.
Made new close friends?
Not really. Made better friends with people I already knew though, which is good. Examples: Meghan, Sarah, Mike, Marc, Ben&Amanda.
Favorite nights out?
I didn't go out too much, so pretty much all of them. New Year's Eve, the MBA graduation party in downtown Portsmouth, the Boogie party night, St. Patrick's Day, SantaCon.
Any regrets?
Just a few. Trying to be something I was not for a while at the beginning of the year. Losing a friendship that I had since high school, and I didn't realize was gone until too late.
What do you want to change in 2010?
I have some projects with the house that I want to accomplish, but mostly I don't want anything to change too much. Oh, I have to be a little more productive at work because this will be a big year for me.
Overall, how would you rate this year on a scale of 1-5?
4. Always room for improvement. As my Mommy said, "You have a great job and a beautiful house. But what's all this happiness worth without someone to share it with?"
Have any life changes in 2009?
Not really. 2008 was the big life-changing year.
Change your hairstyle?
Of course. Always! Right now, I have bangs and streaks of blue, with a dark, almost black base color.
Get a new job?
Nope, still working at UNH, getting paid by NASA.
Do you have a New Year's resolution?
I never do. It's one of those things I'm firmly against. I have goals always throughout the entire year. So, if you're asking what my current goal is for this week, it's to get ready for Antarctica, mentally and logistically.
Get married or divorced?
Nope.
Start a new hobby?
Knitting! Just learned on the plane to San Francisco. I finished my first project which I endearingly refer to as The Pink Monstrosity. I'm now practicing increasing and decreasing stitches so I can make mouse toys for the cats.
Are you happy to see 2009 go?
Sure, I like when years go by. Makes for better nostalgia.
Been naughty or nice?
Nice, I think.
What are you wishing for in 2010?
All the good things that are happening continue to happen. And I really wish for my friends and families to be happy and feel right in their lives (if they don't already).
Happy New Year!
