Several things.

1) The internet is still broken. Moving on.

2) I've been sort of in a genderswitch kick lately, or wanting to be in one. I'M SORRY! But L/Light is SO MUCH MORE appealing when they're genius girls, and you know that Rabi would be a sassy smirky loud mouthed redhead. For not mentioning that the uniform would look smockin' hot... and ( Read more... )

*Warning: I'm a feminist. No shame about it. Also, I was raised in a very political home. SOY ZURDA.*

3) The point is that, in this time and age, gender and sexual orientation are not neutral. So yeah, we'll keep poking because if we don't, nothing changes. Pretending something doesn't happen has never worked.
And no, recognizing the problem doesn't cause it... seriously, I hate that point.

But a part of me still can't quite get why it's so important what gender does it for me or someone. I think it's also part of the problem that I have with feminists and the whole gender-fights is that the idealist pink-bubble-wrapped part of me can't SEE what the big deal is. My ego is healthy enough that when I do something, I don't think I do it because I'm a woman, but that I do it because it's something I like, period.
Yeah, my experience? I live quite nicely, despite being a woman in the Third World. The thing is that I'm goddamn freaking lucky. I'm middle class. White. Raised in a Christian environment. University student.
In this day and age, gender/sexual orientation/race/religion/social class does matter no matter how lucky we are. Other people are suffering the worst side of it and we're enjoying their opression.
And your ego doesn't have anything to do with sexism. My really big ego doesn't stop construction workers when they say barrasabas while I walk down the street.

And girly stuff is nice (I like some traditionally girly stuff)... but the thing is that many times people do force you into them.
My brother loves Barbies but nobody ever gives him Barbies on his birthday. they give him cars which I'd loved to get when I was a kid but you see, I was a girl.
That was a really stupid example, but I think the point is clear.

then there comes the times when I see all the other people getting angry at stuff that I liked or enjoyed because - in their words - it was sexist/homophobic
I love the Quijote. It's sexist, antisemitic, anti-muslim and a whole load of other things. I recognize it and move on. If I were to agree with all authors I like I wouldn't like any at all.

If you keep resenting or pushing on past things, then a) you're not letting the wound heal since you keep poking at it and b) you're kind of making yourself a victim and giving Them the power to hurt you.
A) It's not the past, it's the present questioning the past. We keep going on and on about the past because it's about the present! So yeah, until no girls die in illegal abortions in Argentina I won't stop talking about Victorian sexual repression. It's all connected.
B) No, I'm not. They'll abuse me even if I don't see it, you know? I'd rather be a conscious victim than an ignorant one.

And I actually agree that some coming-out fic seems very out of place.
