Several things.

1) The internet is still broken. Moving on.

2) I've been sort of in a genderswitch kick lately, or wanting to be in one. I'M SORRY! But L/Light is SO MUCH MORE appealing when they're genius girls, and you know that Rabi would be a sassy smirky loud mouthed redhead. For not mentioning that the uniform would look smockin' hot... and ( Read more... )

On the Coming-out in fanfiction comment: I totally agree about the sex-shouldn't-matter thing. Me, I've never felt particularly like a girl, and I was never forced into clichés. Feminists drive me up the wall on on a regular basis. I HATE people telling me how women like to buy shoes or clothes and how men read computer magazines. Me, I've always seen myself a person and I don't define myself much with if I'm male or female. I like girly stuff. I like nerdy boys stuff. I'm ME, dammit! That's why I think gender doesn't matter when it comes to love - or better it shouldn't. (I wouldn't go so far to say everyone's completely bisexual, but hey, I don't think gener matters when it comes to emotional attraction - physical preferrance being a totally different thing.) Okay, where was I? I lost my thread of argument..... Anyway I can perfectly understand your point here.

However, as you very well know *cough*

Eh, last time I checked feminists say you can like anything. We fight against this 'people telling me how women like to buy shoes or clothes and how men read computer magazines.'. We're about choice and yeah, we have our idiots as every movement does but yet you seem to be a feminist even if we drive you up the wall! Yeah, saying gender doesn't/shouldn't matter is being a feminist. Wel, a kind of feminist...
And even if you think that gender doesn't matter, the world tends to disagree with you. This ain't an utopia and saying feminists drive you up the wall doesn't help to build it.

She's talking about the extreme!feminists, the ones who get angry at anything that has to do with men.

I'm sorry I overreacted. It's a very sore point with me and I'm a little sick of people saying that with no explanation nor aclaración whatsoever.
Sorry.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I should have made my point clearer; I see that now. I was mostly typing with Nina in mind, who knows how I think about these things, so I guess I didn't realise this could be misunderstood by someone who didn't know my meaning. No offense was intended ( ... )

Yeah, I kinda jumped in without thinking or giving you the benefit of the doubt. >.< Sorry again.

Well, that's the point: we not crazy men-haters must use the word 'feminist' so that it keeps its meaning. In a way, it's self-defeating to just call yourself 'pro-equality'. Don't let the crazy/stupid people use the word. XP

Spanish has the same issue and I'm of your opinion, specially because most words have a randomly assigned gender which doesn't have anything to do with reality. A table is not a woman or a man. Well, actually, it's both if we pay attention to both Spanish and German... if it was der Tisch, that's it. *is very bad at gender in Deutsch*
Talking specifically about German, why don't just go to Neutral and leave it at that? I don't know, saying 'das Studenten' sounds simpler than going for redundancy.

Ah, but you see, you can't have a gender-neutral form of "students" in German. ;) You have to have either or, a neutral form would be "die Studentlein", which would be a) such an old word it would sound very strange and b) "-lein" is the suffix for something small, so it would mean you're belittling the students XD. Sadly, all words have assigned genders, which is why I think it's completely pointless wanting to interpret that as being discriminating ( ... )

Oh, I see. XP

Well, for me, Feminist has a lot of history behind it, history that I do want to reclaim and it highlights how today's feminist movement is not new but rather is just continuing a long fight.
And it's 'feminist' because it's focused on women for the simple reason that we're the ones being oppressed (among other groups, of course). Calling it 'pro-equality' erases the fact that men are not oppressed (for being men, that is). 'Feminist', for me, makes clear that this particular movement is focused on women's rights and on making them equal to men.
'Pro-equality' sounds so general that it means nothing at all. Specially because 'equality' can mean a thousands things for different people.
Question: have you actually met so many crazy feminists in your life? Because I haven't. O_o *wonders whether feminists in Germany are crazier or whether your very unlucky*

Ah, I see. I understand your meaning, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

And well, I think it's an unhealthy mix of both. XP There seems to be a lot of discussion about all kinds of feminism in the media, some arguments I can understand, some seem to be a little over the top for me. I've heard some pretty weird stuff at my university, too. The women's representative did a little calculation, how many of our professors were male and how many female. Her argumentation was such: "Our College director is a man, which makes him 100% male and 0% female. This might be seen as discrimination." o.O I mean, what's he supposed to be, a hermaphrodite?

I actually considered taking women's studies, but, yeah, sadly I was surrounded by a lot of these extreme!feminists (both students and professors), so that kind of put me off.
