Lizzie glared slightly at the ringing phone. She was knee deep in paperwork, and figured if she let it go to the machine, it wouldn’t bother her anymore. And for about five minutes, she was right. Then the phone started ringing again. She gave it another equally evil glare, before picking up the phone and answering. “Elizabeth Anderson.”
“I’m in New York for two days.”
She recognized the voice from the minute he started talking and the look on her face immediately melted from a glare into a smile and she leaned back in her chair. “How nice for you.”
“I want to see you.”
“Do you really?” she smirked. “‘Fraid I can’t make any promises, Kevin.”
“Why not?”
“Because I have a boyfriend,” she said. “And I’d rather spend time with him than my ex-boyfriend.”
“Even if it’s your ex-boyfriend who you love dearly, still consider a good friend, and happens to only be in town for two days?”
“Yes, because I’ve been friends with him longer.”
“Even if it’s a guy who’s promising to buy you a really fantastic dinner at the best restaurant and town, just because he can?”
“My boyfriend cooks.”
“I can cook.”
“I’m not in the mood for grilled cheese.”
“Liz-you’re killing me here,” he groaned, but she could tell that there was a grin on his face. “All I’m asking is for one dinner with an old friend.”
“And you’re in town for two days?”
“Two days.”
“And when do you have dinner free?”
“Tomorrow night.”
“This dinner better be fantastic, Kevin.”
“Oh, trust me, sweetheart-it will be.”
“Call me with the details?”
“Will do.”
She hung up, and closed her eyes for a minute, knowing that this really wasn’t the best time to be having dinner with an ex-boyfriend. But Kevin Townsend wasn’t in town often, and she had to take the opportunity while she had it. Besides-he was an old friend after all. And she really did want to see him. Kevin always promised an interesting evening, and she was definitely looking forward to what he had to tell her this time.

“So I was thinking we might see a movie tomorrow?” Robert asked as he cooked, looking up in surprise when he caught her cringing slightly. “What?”
“I actually have plans tomorrow night,” she said slowly. “A friend of mine called, said he wants to have dinner-he’s only going to be in town for a few days.”
“Oh,” Robert said with a nod. “You didn’t mention it before.”
“Just kind of-happened. He called this morning,” she said with a shrug. “It’s no big deal.”
“Whatever you say,” he said with a nod. “Who is he?”
“Kevin Townsend,” she said with a sigh, moving to slide her arms around his waist from behind. “He’s an old friend from college.”
“And he kept in touch?”
“We were really close,” she said softly.
He hesitated for a minute, before asking. “How close?”
She paused for a minute, watching his face from behind before responding. “We dated for a while.”
“So he’s an ex?”
“Yeah, he is.”
“Is he one of the guys you-”
“Yeah-he was the first guy, actually.”
“Oh.”
She moved her hand over his stomach, pushing herself closer and dropping a kiss on his shoulder. “We’re just friends.”
“I know.”
“You’re must better company,” she murmured softly. “Plus, I’d rather have you cook for me, than have him buy me dinner any day of the week.”
He smiled slightly at that before nodding. “I know.”
“He’s just only in town for a short time-and I haven’t seen him in almost a year now.”
“I know,” he replied, turning down the heat and turning to face her. “It’s okay. Really.”
“You sure?” she said, sliding her arms around his neck. “Because I’ll cancel if it makes you uncomfortable.”
“It’s fine,” he murmured, before leaning in to kiss you. “I’ll see you after dinner’s over?”
“Absolutely,” she said with a wide smile, before leaning in to kiss him softly. “Meet me at my place?”
“Your place it is,” he grinned, before leaning in to kiss her again.

“So where are you heading next?” Lizzie asked, leaning back in her seat and looking over at him. Kevin gave her a small smile before leaning forward on the table slightly.
“You look fantastic. Have I told you that lately?”
“Kevin.”
The smile faltered only for a moment, before sitting up more and taking a sip of his wine. “Cabo. I’m going to Cabo,” he said with a nod.
“That sounds nice,” she said slowly. “Business or pleasure?”
“Are you kidding me?” he said, raising an eyebrow. “My employers aren’t that generous. I’m going for pleasure. Friend of mine is getting married.”
“Good for him,” she nodded.
“You know, I do need a date,” he said, putting on a face that made it look like he was considering something. “Interested in a bit of a vacation?”
She sighed, rolling her eyes. “I have a boyfriend, remember?”
“Just as friends,” he said with a shrug. “You get to head down to the beach, get a tan, I get to have a gorgeous woman on my arm for the evening-win, win.”
“Sounds good,” she said with a nod. “Can my boyfriend come?” Kevin’s face formed a good natured pout, and she couldn’t help a slight smile. “C’mon, Kev. You know me better than that.”
“What’s so great about this particular guy anyway?”
“He’s my best friend.”
“Getting along with him that well?” he said, raising an eyebrow.
“He’s really my best friend. I’ve known him since I was two.”
“That can’t be great for the sex life.”
“Actually the sex life is pretty fantastic, but that’s none of your business,” she said with a smirk.
“Oh, come on ‘Lizbeth,” he said with a grin. “It’s not like I haven’t already been there.”
“Drop it, Townsend.”
“Fine, fine,” he said with a sigh. “Well, just so you know-the invitation is still open if you feel like a side trip to Cabo.”
“Don’t get your hopes up.”
“Oh, Liz-with you I just can’t help it.”

“I missed you last night,” she sighed as she curled up next to him. “I mean, I like Kevin-but I missed spending time with you.”
“Good to know,” he murmured, sliding his arms around her and pulling her closer. “I missed you too.”
She sighed softly as she relaxed next to him, starting to close her eyes when there was a sudden knock at the door. She pouted slightly, before turning to look at him. “Go get rid of them?”
“It’s your apartment.”
“Please?” she said, giving him a wide eyed look, and he shook his head before starting to get up from the couch. A few minutes later, and she heard a bit of hushed conversation, before Robert’s face reappeared.
“Guy named Kevin here’s to see you.”
She frowned slightly, before getting up and moving towards the doorway. When she saw that he really was there, she frowned more and moved towards him. “What’re you doing here?”
“You were on the way to the airport, and I wanted to talk to you about something before I left,” he began, before glancing towards Robert and back to Lizzie. “Alone.”
“Yeah, sure,” she said with a nod, giving Robert a small smile, before moving out into the hallway with Kevin and shutting the door. “What’s up?”
“Well, first of all-you left this in the car,” he began, before holding a simple silver bracelet. Her eyes widened slightly as she took it from him.
“Oh, my God-I can’t believe I lost it.”
“I know how much it meant to you-figured I’d return it while I have the chance,” he said with a nod.
“Thank you,” she said softly, before reattaching the bracelet to her wrist.
“So that’s the guy, huh?” he asked, nodding back towards the door.
“That’s him.”
“Seems like a good guy.”
“He is.”
“Good,” he said with a nod. “Because if he wasn’t, I’d have to steal you away from him, and I hate it when I have to put the extra effort in.”
She shook her head slightly, before giving him a grin. “Have I mentioned you haven’t changed a bit?”
“No, you haven’t,” he said with a grin, taking her hand in his. “Good to know that I’m memorable.”
“Kevin, I doubt anyone could ever forget you.”
His grin widened as he moved closer to her. “You know-that trip to Cabo is still open.”
“No, Kevin.”
“Alright,” he said with a nod. “I know when I’m beaten. Can’t argue with a woman in love.”
She blushed slightly at that, before shaking her head. “I’m not-”
“Liz-no one knows the look you wear when you’re head over heels better than me,” he said with a nod, before leaning in and giving her a kiss on the cheek. “I hope he makes you happy.”
“He does,” she said softly. He gave her a smile, before squeezing her hand lightly.
“I’ll see you the next time I’m in town.”
“See you,” she said with a nod, before watching him disappear down the hall.
