“So what have you been up to, kiddo?” Anderson asked as he sat down on the couch next to Timmy. The Andersons and the Rosses got together every once in a when they could find the free time, when Resa would make dinner, and they just had a chance to get together and talk. Timmy looked up at him from his book and gave him a big shrug.
“Oh, I dunno, lotsa stuff.”
“Lots of stuff?” Anderson said with a nod. “Like what?”
“Well, Mom and Dad went inta the city one day, so Lizzie got to babysit us for a little while.”
Anderson looked up and spotted his daughter coming into the room, and gave her a grin. “Did she really?”
“Yup,” Lizzie grinned, before sitting down on the other side of Timmy. “We had fun, didn’t we, Tim?”
“Sure we did,” Timmy nodded. “Until her boyfriend showed up.”
Lizzie froze slightly, and then looked over at her father. Anderson raised an eyebrow, before turning back to Timmy. “Her boyfriend?”
“Yeah,” Timmy nodded, still focused on his book. “He was okay, but then they started kissing and it was gross.”
“They were kissing?” he said, looking at his daughter.
“Yeah,” Timmy continued, oblivious to what was going on over his head. “His name is Robert. And he’s okay, I guess.”
“Robert, huh?” Anderson smirked, and Lizzie looked away uncomfortably, scratching the back of her neck lightly. “He’s just okay?”
“Well, he wasn’t there for very long. Lizzie forgot to tell him she was babysittin’ us, so he came over ta see her, and she had ta tell ‘im that he couldn’t. He kissed her goodbye though. That was gross.”
“I’m sure it was,” Anderson nodded.
“Yeah, and it lasted forever,” Timmy said, rolling his eyes. Lizzie’s jaw dropped slightly.
“It did not.”
“Yes it did,” Timmy said with a giggle. “You probably have cooties.”
“Well, if I did, I could probably give them do you, couldn’t I?” she said, giving him a grin.
“No you won’t!” he said, his eyes going wide.
“Wanna bet?” she said, starting to reach for him, and he shrieked before climbing off the couch and running off into the kitchen. She laughed as she watched him before glancing back over and seeing her father watching her from the side. “Hi, Daddy.”
“Hi, Lizzie.”
“How’s it goin’?”
“When were you going to tell me?”
“Tell you what?”
“That you were dating Robert?” He sighed, sliding an arm around her shoulders. “And I’m going to assume that this is Robert Pino?”
“Yes, it’s Robert Pino,” she sighed. “And I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“When? Well-” she began, biting her lip slightly. “When-”
“You weren’t, were you?”
“Well, I knew it would come out eventually, I just-” she sighed. “Dad, you’re so picky. And I know you know Robert, and you know that he’s a good guy, but you guys work together. I didn’t want things to be awkward because you were pissed at him because he’s dating me.”
“Does Rachel know?”
“I dunno,” she said with a shrug.
“She probably does. Robert tells her things.” There was a slight hurt tone to her father’s voice and Lizzie rolled her eyes.
“Dad, don’t start.”
“Don’t start? How long have you two been dating?”
She paused, thinking for a minute before replying. “Four, five months?”
“Nearly half a year, and you haven’t told me yet.”
“Dad!”
“Lizzie, you’re too old to be speaking to your father that way,” Lauren sighed as she came into the room. “Teenage angst should have expired about ten years ago or so.”
“Dad’s being ridiculous about this.”
“Being ridiculous about what?”
“She’s dating Robert Pino,” Anderson replied.
“She’s been dating for him like six months-this is new to you?” Lauren frowned.
Anderson turned back to his daughter with wide eyes. “You told your mother and you didn’t tell me?”
“I didn’t know Mom knew, I swear,” Lizzie frowned, turning back to her mother. “How do you know?”
“You’ve been too happy. I thought you might have gotten back together with that guy in college, so I gave him a call and he told me.”
“There was a guy in college?” Anderson said, before turning to look at Lauren. “How do you know these things?”
“Because my daughter’s not afraid to talk to me about some things.”
“That wasn’t it-Mom inadvertently met him,” Lizzie rolled her eyes. “And yes, I’m not afraid to talk to Mom, but really that isn’t the point, Dad. The point is that I wasn’t ready to tell you. When I was ready, I would have.”
“Honey, why don’t you go help Resa in the kitchen?” Lauren sighed, before getting up and moving closer to Anderson. “I’m gonna talk to your father.”
“Okay,” Lizzie sighed, before getting up and moving back into the kitchen. Lauren settled in next to Anderson and he turned to give her a look.
“I found out from a three year-old, Laur,” he said, giving her a look. “A three year-old.”
“I know, Mike,” she sighed, pulling him closer and starting to rub his shoulder lightly. “I know.”
