Lizzie grunted slightly as she took the box of evidence that had been almost shoved at her. She knew the detective didn’t like her, for some reason she couldn’t quite place, and it was taking everything in her to bite her tongue and just take it, not wanting to cause any trouble.

“And don’t lose it, alright?” the woman sneered, giving her a look.

“I’m not an idiot, sweetie,” Lizzie replied, rolling her eyes.

“Whatever,” Detective Valerie Sanchez rolled her eyes right back before walking off and the other paralegal with her, Michael Malone, gave her a smirk.

“Don’t worry about her. She’s got a constant case of PMS.”

Lizzie turned back to him and raised an eyebrow. “You think all women have a constant case of PMS.”

“Hey-you, newbie, have not known me long enough to make that assumption,” he said with a nod, balancing the box in his hand. “And just so you know, when I have a girlfriend, she never has PMS. Even when she does.”

“Smart man,” Lizzie smirked before shifting her box in her hands. She was navigating the crimelab like she had grown up there-which technically she had, and Mike followed her, slightly amazed.

“You know this place well.”

“My dad was a cop,” she nodded. “I grew up around this place.”

“And you’re working for one of the biggest defense firms in the city?” Mike said, surprised, and she shrugged.

“It was a job. The DA’s office didn’t have any open positions; I had interned at the firm while I was in law school, so-when they offered me a position, I wasn’t going to turn it down.”

“Interesting,” he murmured, before catching his shoulder against a dark-haired man’s who was coming around the corner. “Sorry about that, man.”

“It’s alright,” the other man replied softly, before turning to head back to what he was doing. Lizzie watched him as he went, and her eyes went wide.

“Robert?”

The man turned around at the sound of his name, and his eyes widened slightly. “Lizzie?”

“Lizzie?” Michael smirked. “I thought it was just ‘Liz’.”

“He’s got an excuse,” Lizzie replied with a smirk, before turning back to Robert with a smile. “It’s been a long time.”

“Yeah, it has,” he nodded. “Last I heard you were in law school.”

“Well, I graduated,” she said with a grin. “I’m a paralegal over at Hawthrone and Milton.”

“Hawthrone and Milton,” he frowned. “The firm who’s defending Miles Walker III?”

She shrugged. “It’s a job.”

“Right,” Robert nodded. “I take it you’re here to pick up the-”

“Evidence copies,” she said with a nod, holding up the box slightly. Robert nodded looking at her a little warily, and she swallowed uncomfortably. “You know, we should have coffee or something sometime. Catch up.”

“We should,” he nodded, before giving her a smile. “Are you still at the same number?”

“Yeah,” she said with a nod.

“I’ll give you a call sometime.”

“Good,” she said with a smile, before giving him a slightly awkward wave. “I’ll see you then.”

Robert nodded, before waving back and disappearing down the hall. Lizzie turned with heavy sigh, before starting to walk towards the door again. Michael watched her carefully, before speaking up again.

“Friend of yours?”

She nodded. “Very good friend. Very old friend.”

“Best friend?”

She smiled slightly before nodding. “Yeah, you could say that.”

“Boyfriend?”

She blinked slightly, before shaking her and with a frown. “No, God, no. I mean-he took me to prom, but-that was it.”

“Uh-huh.”

“That was it.”

“You like him.”

“Oh-my God,” she groaned. “What is it with people wanting us to get together?”

“So you are into him?”

“I never said that.”

“So you don’t want to jump him?”

“Of course not.”

“But you wouldn’t mind if he wanted to jump you?”

“Why are we having this conversation?” Lizzie replied, giving him a look.

“Because we bumped into your ex-boyfriend.”

“He’s not my ex-boyfriend.”

“Then what is he?”

“He’s just a friend. A very old, very good friend, who I haven’t seen in a long time. That’s it.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Michael was quiet for a minute, before shaking his head. “You so wanna jump him.”

“I do-oh, my God.” She shook her head, burying her face in her hands. “We’re not talking about this anymore.”

“Fine,” Michael said with a smirk. “I still say you wanna jump him.” When her hand came across the back of his head, he gave her an offended look, rubbing it lightly as they walked. “Hey! What was that for?”
