Old Bull Lee dries him out.

Not as though he's not been away from himself for years now- Every film, every art show, every poetry reading has been in some way a peeling back of layers and, at the same time, a taking on of someone else's skin, someone else's life, just to see what he can learn about himself.

He still doesn't like death. It still offends him.

So here he is, 52 today, rambling purposefully through the scene over and over until some other casual, driven, spontaneous train-of-thought moment from Kerouac's writing becomes visual, takes on its own life and frees him to move on.

Tonight he'll write a little. Smoke some. Drink. Put his feet up, hat slid over his eyes, and snooze.

Wake tomorrow to e-cards and voice-mails, photos sent from here and there with birthday wishes, reminders that, when Old Bull Lee has dissolved into cans of film and shirts hung away in the closet, his own life will still be all around him, keeping him afloat, carrying him along.
