Yuletide Recs

A batch of recs from yuletide! The first two fics are my lovely gifts! This is an initial batch, there will hopefully be a second batch in the next few days.

Impact (2008)
In Event of Moon Disaster (11135 words) by Anonymous
Roland/Alex UST and various canon het. This fic is all sorts of AMAZING.The fandom, the canon-right nature of it, the writing style, OMG everything! BTW, it claims to be slash but it can be read very easily as gen as the slash is mostly UST. It's painful and unresolved UST but I think that just adds to the caliber of the whole thing, the mood and the bitterness that seems to linger around Alex at the end there. It respects the canon het and OH MARTINA. Martina is lovely in this. AND ROLAND! My love for Roland has just exploded, I thin. He is so perfectly in character. Just the whole thing. And something tells me that this can be read even without canon knoledge. A few things might be not quite clear, but It's just a great epic of friendship and love and life. (And, oh, come on, who doesn't love UST between gorgeous, ridiculously intelligent men.)

Vanity Fair
Osborne of Ours (1348 words) by Anonymous
William, George, Amelia in all paring permutations. I love the tone of this. And the sexy-but-not-explicit relationships and scenes. And the metaphorical threesome. And George/William. And you know, just George being a bit snarky goes a long way always. Bottom line: it's just FUN.

AO3 Tags/Anthropomorphic
The Bar at the End of the Fandom (3911 words) by Anonymous
Some AMAZING characterizations and personifications of different fandom tags and tropes and genres. It's giggle-worthy and thought provoking and a lovely commentary on fandom, if you thing about it. (Rated R)

Somebody had to write this (so why not me?) (189 words) by Anonymous
This is just cracktastic. It's purified crack at it's finest. That's all.

Andrew in Drag (song)
Stricken (2347 words) by Anonymous
Andrew/OMC. A lovely expansion on the song. Crossdressing. Boys being friends and then that blurred line of where gender/sex and sexuality intersect. Great pacing, very even writing style. More of less no knoledge of canon required. (Rated R)

Brideshead Revisited
Deep in the Golden Evening (1876 words) by Anonymous
Charles/Sebastian. Beautiful! The language is just lovely and the whole thing takes on a very nostalgic feeling. The boys are adorable and in character, their love is palpable and the whole thing is just happy and sad all at once. This fandom and this paring are just amazing, period. (Rated R)

Lonely Under Moon and Star (2448 words) by Anonymous
Sebastian/Anthony. I wasn't sure how I would feel about this, given the paring and the fact that I'm a hardcore Charles/Sebastian shipper but I really liked this one. The narrative is kinda flippant which is in interesting contrast to the rather somber subjects. Sebastian is so lost, even though he doesn't realize that he is. Anthony is sympathetic, even though I've never seen him as that before very much. The development of their relationship is just so understandable but it's obvious that Sebastian has no clue what he's getting into and the way he reacts to the whole thing and how isolated he seems is just heartbreaking. It's a touching story, if not disturbing. (Rated R)

Dangerous Liaisons
Seducing Danceny (1996 words) by Anonymous
Valmont/Danceny, Cecile/Valmont
Just good old sexy fun. And the paring -- the paring is lovely! And a fun, different, naughty look at Cecile to boot. (Rated R/NC-17)

Iowa (Dar Williams song)
A Great and Gruesome Height (19126 words) by Anonymous
Summary: It's 1998, Josiah Bartlet is the Democratic nominee battling sitting Republican President Lawrence Armstrong for the Oval Office, and back in Iowa, Republican campaign coordinator Megan Richter is about to fall from a great and gruesome height.
THIS FIC. OMG, I have so many feelings about this fic! I will point out right away that no knoledge of canon is required for this at all. it's just a wonderful piece of fiction, very thoughtful. It's wonderfully written and everything from the pacing to the characters is just great. This fic touches on so many things. Certainly the obvious: sexuality, sexual awakening, perception of self, etc. But beyond that, it also touches on political stuff. Not politics itself, per se, although it does have politics (and it's about field campaigners! Internship nostalgia OMG) in it as a driving force. But it's more that perception and divide between Republicans and Democrats and the stereotypes there are of both parties and the perceptions that we have of each other based on the political affiliations. (And it's handled with great tact as well.) It's written from the POV of a Rep character, and I was a little worried about that at first, but she's very sympathetic and the whole thing is just handled very well. (And, to all my fellow Dems/liberals, there's a happy ending, in more ways than on ;) ).

Mean Girls
Dyke (4097 words) by Anonymous
Regina George/Janis Ian. This is lovely backstory to the movie and how Regina got to be Regina and what happened to her friendship with Janis. It's a more or less well handled and realistic portrayal of middle school girls.

Snow White and the Huntsman
Negotiations (895 words) by Anonymous
The Huntsman/Snow White/William. This had to be written. This is great to provide closure for that hint-at-threesome ending of the movie. (Rated NC-17).
