It has come to my (easily amused) attention that following an as of yet unstarted initiative by Gordon Brown, Times Online Readers have submitted suggestions for a motto that should "capture Britishness in five or six words".

And you get everything, from passionately pompous ("Pride, passion, history, monarchy & exploration") to artificially ancient ("Frater magnus spectat te") to terribly tongue-in-cheek ("Let's discuss it down the pub"). But I think my favourite one is "I fart in your general direction"...
