A few months ago, Lilben was driving an errand for work, when all of a sudden, this old guy in a Mercedes turned left in front of him, and totalled his beater car.( it was the one that I got for him for 125.00 and put some work into it). Since it was the other guys fault, HIS insurance company had to give us the value of the car. We got 2500.00...The money stayed in my checking account until this past week when Lilben saw a car that he wanted (to replace the totalled one)...Well, Friday night, we went down to Delaware to look at it...
And, the girl who owned it brought it to Lilben's house on Sat. All the numbers matched on the title and the car, so we gave her a certified check and some cash for the car.
I took the title and other paperwork to the tag and title people here in Pa. to get it transferred into my name. The lady at the tag place looked at the title and discovered that the girl's Dad had never transferred the car to HIS name and address in Delaware, and, hence, had never had real ownership of the car!!..( he only had it listed as sold from the first guy). Here in Pa., a person cannot hold an "open" title (only a dealer can do that).
We leave the tag place and call the guy and have him meet us halfway to get our check back cuz, by now, I'm a little concerned about the whole situation...I mean, they seemed like nice people and I'm hoping that they just made a small mistake in not transferring the title to their name. Anyways, we meet up and he wanted to give the cash back...I insisted that he give us the check back since it was for far more money than the cash...He agreed, and I gave him the title back to get transferred to his name on monday...The car now sits at Ben's house, and we have the key....
As I was typing this, I called the girl and wanted to suggest that they bring back the cash also, and take the car 'till the title is proper for transferring. As we were talking, her Dad got on the phone and ASSURED me that he would get it done on Monday, and we could meet up and make the re-exchange for the check....I told him :"okay, but, if something happens at his DMV, and he's not able to get a clear title, they would have to come and get the car, and give us our cash back till this was settled." He got a little pissy and sorta made it sound as if I was questioning his ethics. I was def. not accusing him of anything shady but, my main concern was for his daughter, who now has NO car, and NO money ( other than the cash) to go and buy another car....my second concern was, of course, that WE had no way to "own" the car...We'll see what happens tomorrow...hopefully, it's just a paperwork drill, and everything will work out okay....
Jeezus!!...this was a lenghty post!!..but, I thought I better put it on here, in case I need to go back and check dates or somethin'
Peace all.....ill update later, hopefully, with good news
