July (20):
Auferstehung (Leo Tolstoi): A rather deep novel about cause and effect, guilt and forgiveness, personal resposibility and societal responsibility in pre-revolutionary Russia.
Aurora (Alastair Reynolds): This story begins with the murder of an orbital. It ends with what might be the end of the world. Once again Reynolds paints a wonderful and believable world.
The Celtic Reconstructionist FAQ (Various Authors): An introduction to the pagan belief that tries to reconstruct the faith and culture of the celts. I can hand you a link if you're interested. Reading this now.
Der Club Dumas (Artur Pérez-Reverte): Most of you probably know this under the title the film version was given: The Nine Gates. Book and film differ in many points, but not so much that you'd say the film was awful. Actually, I like both versions very much.
Erlkönig (Dead beat) - The Dresden Files 7 (Jim Butcher): So Harry is finally loosing his marbles thanks to a deamon in his head, and there are these Necromancers looking for this book, his fairy godmother wants the book, and there's this zombie T-Rex in the middle of Chicago...
Firmin - Ein Rattenleben (Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife) (Sam Savage): The autobiography of a rat living in a book shop. It's supposed to be a tale of dark humour, but for me it was slightly... depressing. Not a bad book, but...
Das geheime Leben der Bücher (Régis de sá Moreira): Another book from that small package sternenwanderer sent me, a fairy tale about a book shop and it's owner... occupant... symbiont?
Gesammelte Werke (Friedrich Nietzsche): Who would have known he had so much to say on the topic of theatre? Not me.
Eine Hand voll Sterne (Rafik Schami): A tale of youth in Damascus, and how the seeds of rebellion are planted into the hearts of the young to flower into hope.
Herr der Nacht (Night's master) (Tanith Lee): Short Stories set in her "Flat Earth", her older fiction seems to have fallen out of favor over the last years. If you can find it, I recommend it.
House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski): A man's decsent into a madness while reading a man's manuscript about a film that doesn't exist about a man decsending into a house that can't exist... or is it? (orakel, have you finished it?)
Die letzte Walstatt (The Power that preserves) (Stephan Donaldson): The final part in the first Trilogy of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, I've got two or three chapters to go.Covenant is once again whisked off to the Land to fight Foul who is now in contral of the Staff of Law, even as he fights his own inner demons and mistakes and choices.
Meine Freunde die Roboter (Isaac Asimov): A compilation of all of Asimov's Robot stories. I decided it was time to get back to this classic author of the Golden Age of SF. You can tell this is the early Asimov - his characters are even more wooden than normal, but as always, you don't read Asimov for the dialouge, you read him for the BIG IDEAS. Reading this now.
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen): Did I ever tell you guys that this is one of my favorite books of all time?
Reise im Mondlicht (Antal Szerb): JUST started this book from the package sternenwanderer sent me. I'm four or five chapters in, and all I can tell is that it has something to do with someone's honeymoon.
Schuldig (Proven Guilty) - The Dresden Files 8 (Jim Butcher): So Molly, the daughter of Harry's friend Michael comes looking for help, as there's something loose at a film festival. Does it help that Harry has been warned of black magic loose in the city or that it's a horror film festival? Well what do you think?
Der siebte Kreis des Wissens (The Illearth War) (Stephan Donaldson): The second book in the chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, in which Covenant returns to the Land to face Lord Foul's plan to break the Land - a plan he is part of...
Spells & Chrome (John Helfers, editor): The latest collection of short stories set in the World of Shadowrun, a game where magic has returned to a world in the grips of a cyberpunk (Now almost transhuman) future. Now reading this.
Starship Troopers (Robert A. Heinlein): Forget the film for a moment. The REAL controversy is the book. Read it, then get back to me and we'll talk about what you think about Heinlein's political views and philosophies.
Tote ohne Begräbnis (Jean-Paul Sartre): And another book from that package, a small play that probably everyone apart from me read at school or something...
