I really want to quit drinking, but I'm afraid I don't know how. Part of the issue is that people tend to assume that all you have to do is stop. The problem is, it's not that easy. Alcohol is addictive. If you have an allergy to seafood, you just don't eat seafood, and it's as simple as that. The problem is that when it comes to alcohol, your

I'm usually just a lurker, but for some reason felt compelled to say something here... I know it probably doesn't mean much, but avoiding alcohol can be done. I'm 30 and have never drunk. Ok, I know, don't blow me off right here, I'm just saying that to say, I'm not a hermit, I've worked with guys who drink, hung out and gone to reenactment with guys who drink, and never felt overwhelmingly socially pressured to drink.
For what it's worth, it might be best to try to find people to hang out with who will respect you if you don't want to drink. Yeah, I've gotten teased a bit, but not harassed.
I by no means want to downplay the addictive aspect, I've never dealt with that so... Yeah.
The best I can offer there is find an alternative... Either an alternative non-alcoholic drink you can enjoy in those situations, or avoid the situations when possible. Work on a hobby, read, research a project, something like that...?
In full disclosure, my abstinence is mainly religious-view-influenced, but I've honestly just never personally seen the attraction either. I don't look down on people who drink moderately and responsibly, I just can't empathize with the "why."
Anyway, I'll leave it at that I guess, I'll be rooting for you but if you aren't interested in my input I'll respect that too.
By the way, I grew up in the boring little town where Updike lived and based his "Rabbit" book... I've never read it, maybe I should to see how similar it is to real life...
Best of luck to you...
