Yo Ant, be careful when installing Linux on the same drive where XP is installed since I heard a lot of horror stories about how the partition fucks up Linux's and XP's coexistence. Best thing to do is install it on a second drive, thus it wouldn't conflict with Windows. Also, regarding distros, personally, I would go with the one that best suites your needs. From what I heard, Gentoo Linux IMHO sounds like a winner since it plays back DVD's, Windows Media files (with the help of third-party codecs and software), and will probably support your hardware with little or no additional drivers to download and install. Here's Gentoo Linux's Wiki page which has all of the info you need to know about installing and using this distro. Keep in mind this is a huge DIY project you're about to embark on, just make sure that you read the installation and configuration instructions thoroughly to the letter T, so that you don't mess up your machine.
