I live with disgusting slobs. We had our unit inspected today, and unsurprisingly we were assessed for cleaning costs. Why am I not surprised? Because my flatmates don't clean. This place (read bathroom and kitchen) only gets cleaned when I can no longer tolerate the squalor. What did surprise me though was the reaction that I got from one of my flatmates when I suggested that he clean out the oven seeing as he's the only one that uses it. Honestly, its this one guy that uses this oven and I didn't even know there was a mess in there because I NEVER use it. When I talked to him in person about it (I also left this suggestion as a note on the assessment notice) he was reasonable about it and kept going on about setting up a cleaning schedule and that he didn't want to be assessed because he couldn't afford the fine. Fine, whatever, as long as the place gets cleaned. Then I come back from class at 20.00 already in a shitty mood to find that he had responded to my note with a sarcastic "Cool! You can do the rest because you're the only one that cares so much :) Sam." This incites anger in me for two reasons. One: this guy made the mess and he should clean it up. Simple as that. Second: cleanliness should be all of our concern as it can have a direct impact on all of our health, especially if someone in the flat is sick. So, I have resolved to not give the outward appearance of caring about the cleanliness of this place. I WILL NOT do any of the cleaning specified in the assessment notice. Unlike him, I CAN afford assessment payments. Furthermore, I will only do a thorough cleaning of any given common room no more than once every six weeks. If he wants to affect everyone with his slobbiness, then so be it.
