It's not too much different, but a lot of phones don't have sim cards in the States. Pretty much you just buy a phone and, as you said buy the airtime to go along with it. I know a bunch of people that have cingular and they say it's good, in regards to service coverage. Here's some sites though that will hopefully help. I don't really know specifically about paying to recieve calls, but I would assume you get charged to recieve calls, although admittedly I thought that was the norm ( ... )

Oh it's for real.
I don't know much about companies but I have Verizon... It's not bad and if someone else has it you can call each other for free (for both of you) + you can get free long distance within the US and to Canada (it's probably all about how you form your plan though). I know there are better companies out there and I'm sure it's not the only one that has the free calling thing. Good luck!

I heart Verizon too, but they don't do pay as you go, only monthly.

argh the paying to receive calls thing has never ceased to amaze me. it is AWFUL. txt is way cheaper here though (in NZ/aussie it's like 20cents a txt i think).

Can you do monthly without going on a contract? As long as I'm not tied in for any length of time...
